There was some tall that there were going to be some throw away picks. I wonder if this was one of them. If so, that looks poorly upon the players we made available. Not even worth picking up for free.

Because now he's a Vegas UFA and not a CGY UFA, so they can negotiate exclusively until the FA period opens up (about 5 days IIRC?).

I doubt he would be the throwaway pick. They could of taken any other of the Flames UFAs in that case.
Taking Engelland, who lives in Las Vegas, is a PR move for their local media to cover. Not someone they make no attempt to sign.

Positive: I didn't really want to lose a guy like Shinkaruk who i think still has some upsdie
Negative: would have preferred to lose a bad contract.

McPhee should impress us and have a deal in place that is an Derek E sign and trade for Brouwer (50%) retained plus a prospect and a 3rd/4th line roster player (Stajan or Bouma).
We knows we need the D depth.

I thought they may take Kulak or Shinkaruk so they could take a look at them in training camp and waive them rather than pick players under contract like Bouma, Stajan, or Brouwer that are overpaid for what they bring to the table. This is essentially the same except it appears they didn't feel either Kulak or Shinkaruk was worth a look.

If this is true the Flames get away basically untouched since Engelland is going to be available to LV July 1 anyways. Honestly a real waste of a pick by McPhee if true. Engelland would have been neen ttere for signing on July 1. Smh @ McPhee. Great news for Treliving.

No picks for Vegas are throwaway picks. That'd be terrible asset management. But they can't pick $4m players from every team. It's not a bad idea to take some role players.
We can't evaluate the Flames available players without knowing how Vegas has them ranked in relation to their needs. Even if they don't sign him, and I'd be a little surprised if they didn't, they may feel his value to them is worth the risk of him not signing.

The most disappointing aspect is we have little wiggle room in regards to adding an outside piece to our forward group, barring a move:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Versteeg-Bennett-Lazar
Chiasson-Stajan-Brouwer
Bouma-Jankowski
I guess you could say Lazar and Jankowski added to the mix as regulars would be a change but still would be nice to add a top-6 player:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Neal
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Ferland-Bennett-Versteeg
Stajan-Jankowski-Lazar
Bouma/Chiasson

Good news if true. I am sad to see Engelland leave and hoped he would be back on a cheap one year contract but in all likely hood that wasn't happening.
Yeah it would have been nice to get salary relief by losing Brouwer or Stajan however although they are overpaid the team would have been worse off by losing them.

Help, save, whatever.

Engelland lives in Vegas, no?
Why wouldn't the Knights just wait until free agency before signing him?
They didn't want any of the Flames exposed players?

No way, Brouwer's a tough cookie. He'll step up!

There was no way Calgary was re-signing him (for the money he is going to want). Good luck to him though.

Pretty damning indictment on the Flame's depth when Luca Spisa makes the cut and the Flames couldn't give any of their players away for free. Seems like one of the 'burn picks' McPhee was talking about.
