Not really at all, no... That's like a mere two teams worth of difference in percentages.

Actually, the league changed the lottery several times because of the Oilers. The percentages changed twice, and then when they made it a three pick lottery.

This needs to be said. The lottery draft is absurdly fixed.
Every so often the NHL needs to correct things for a franchise or do what it takes to ensure a certain franchise doesn't go bankrupt.
They gave the penguins Crosby.
They gave the leafs Matthews.
They turn around and give NJ the #1 overall pick. All because a 1st round pick was taken as a penalty due to Kovalchuk. Now that Kovalchuk is coming back they feel the need to correct the wrongdoing by giving a very unlikely team that #1 overall pick.
Side Note.
Karma is a real bitch for the Avalanche. That organization needs to learn. when you intentionally throw games and end up drafting the 4th best player 1st overall you should learn that being so dishonorable isn't doing positive things for you.
Barkov. Monahan. Jones.
THREE players that will forever haunt you for drafting Mackinnon.
Now you get to draft #4 overall. I feel sorry for the #5/#6 D man they are going to draft. He doesn't deserve being forced to play for the pile of steaming crap that are the Colorado Avalanche.

Um the owners from 5 teams were in the room while the balls dropped. This year one was the canucks owner, doubt he would be cool with this outcone if it was fixed..

Despite my opposing view. I did appreciate reading your post
.
I musr admit that I did find humor that in the same post you claim both that the lottery is fixed and that there is Karma involved in the process.
For me, I used to have similar thoughts toward this annual event, but since the Leafs didn't get hometown hero McDavid in a year where they finished near the bottom and the following year where the struggling coyotes didn't get marketing dream Austin Mathews, I am now convinced there is no rig. The New Jersey connection is poor at best.

Yeah there are representatives for all the teams in the lottery that witness the balls being drawn.
Would be extremely hard for the NHL to fix the result without one of them saying something.

The viability of a conspiracy is inversely proportional to the number of people involved.
And a rigged draft lottery would require that the NHL head office, every single team and the independent companies that handle the lottery itself are all on board. This is only slightly less absurd than most 9/11 conspiracies.

I love that Vancouver got hooped. The fan reaction in that clip is great:

Plus, all the people who would have to agree to the conspiracy are the ones who make the rules. If they wanted to use another method for awarding the first-overall pick, they could just change the rules to that method.
There's no reason for them to go through an elaborate charade to make it seem like the pick is being chosen through a lottery if it isn't.

That's gotta be heart wrenching if you're an Avs fan. It's amazing how bad their management and ownership have screwed up that team, and now after the season they just had to endure, they drop right out of the top 3 in the draft lottery. Ouch.
Three seasons ago they won 52 games. 52 games!
Here is their top 8 scorers from that 52 win season...
C - Duchene (22)
W - Landeskog (20)
C - O'Reilly (22)
C - Mackinnon (18)
C - Stastny (27)
D - Johnson (25)
W - McGinn (25)
D - Barrie (22)
How do you screw that up into the mess we watched this season?!?!

LOL Canucks missed out on #1 by 1 number.
Devils winning combination was 1-5-6-12.
The Canucks were assigned 1-5-6-11

True. There is no reason a lottery needs to exist except that they want it.
It is actually working a lot better now that the "odds" aren't just a formality for rewarding the worst teams the best picks by default. It's still not quite where I personally think it should be, but it is a heck of a lot better than it used to be.

Plus, if they had anywhere from 1 to 9 more points in the standings, they would have finished in New Jersey's spot.

I.....have.....no.....words.
I'm actually so torn on whether I should continue rooting for Edmonton in these playoffs in the spirit of Canadian pride. I can't help but think that my team is going to suffer in disarray for another 4-5 years minimum simply because of the incompetence of the Oilers' prior front office- and now Lowe and MacTavish, still employed by the Oilers, get to silently revel in Edmonton's new competitiveness all due to their own futility as executives and watching new faces like Chiarelli and Nicholson build a team in a way they themselves never could.
It's all a little too sickening.

Not when you consider that they were slated to move into the newest, shiniest, best arena in the NHL within a year-and-a-half.

By not having a single defenseman who could find his own ass in his own zone. The Avalanche were a horrible team, they didn't try and tank, they just sucked.
