Every team has guys that dive. Any fanbase that says otherwise is delusional. Some teams are more obvious than others, but it's not an isolated problem.

Also, it comes down to when and how you do it.
Last 5 minutes of a tie game, Tkachuk gets two minor penalties. The Flames kill them off and they are in the dying seconds before OT.
Wild player hits Gio in the chin with his fist/stick. Definitely should be a penalty. Giordano helps ensure the refs see it in order to give them an easy call for a make-up penalty.
If you dive all the time, you're a filthy, slimy diver.
If you accent a play once in a while, at a key moment in the game, you are an intelligent player.

I personally don't really have a problem with a certain degree of embellishment on a play that should be a penalty anyway.

Replace Giordano with McDavid in this exact sequence of posts in this thread and I bet these two posts aren't made. Embellishment is in the game for sure, but I'd rather as little as possible of it on the team I cheer for and don't offer any justification for it when our guys do it, there's no point.
It's a crappy part of our game, no reason to explain it any other way because it's our guy(s).

McDavid does it multiple times per game.
In that recent game last week, he literally leaped into the bench, untouched, then later in the game, jumped and threw himself into the boards.
If you think that is, in any way, similar to the play last night with Giordano, I don't know what to say to you.

I didn't say that, I clearly wasn't talking about specific plays of McDavid's, I was just stating that if you replace Gio with McDavid in the same discussion, aka this exact string of posts, these diving defense posts wouldn't be here, imo.

I also think we need to know the difference between embellishing and diving. Embellishing is exaggerating a reaction when there's an actual penalty to be called, diving is trying to draw a penalty when no penalty occurred on the play. At least in my mind.

Meh, not a huge importance on distinguishing, imo. All embellishment is unbecoming, not the end of the world but not great either. I'd rather just not see it on our team.

Flames banish the Wild 3-2 in the shootout!
Weird double post.
I do want to say anyways that I love Tkachuk and have absolutely no issue if he's dirty. Love it

I agree with you for the most part, I just think it's more scummy to try draw a penalty when there isn't one than it is to try draw the attention of the refs.
But yes I'd prefer if neither were on our team, or the game in general.

I don't see qualities or intangibles in Pool Party that set him apart from most young player/prospects like I do in Tkachuk. Matthew brings an element to his game that every team needs a bit of. And he's got potential to be one of the best in the game in close around/behind the net. Maybe like a Holmstrom? And you know what kind of success those Detroit teams had.
JP may require more development than guys like Matthews, Laine and Tkachuk, but tbh I'd still take Chucky over him.
It's nice that it looks as of right now that Calgary got the most ideal pick out of the western canadian teams, despite finishing above them and Edmonton "lucking out" with JP dropping.

Yes, because McJesus does it often. Gio doesn't.
You can't simply replace them and not expect different results and comments.

Well, it looks worse on the replay than I recall it. Still - one ref was right on the goal line by the boards - had a pretty clear view of what was happening I'd think and didn't call it. Looks like Tkachuk was peeved at the guy draped over him and pushed his chest out and head up at the same time. There's at least an argument that it was accidental.....
(I didn't say, though, that it's a good one. Nothing on Twitter to indicate that anyone has taken notice of it either, at least that I've seen so far.)

Oh man, okay fine we'll drop McDavid and add any other Canuck or Oiler, or hell, any player in the league not on the Flames. When in the history of Calgarypuck has any of us defended diving from any other team as justifiable, okay or part of the game regardless of who they are or how many times they've don it?
The answer is never, and the point is there's not really any point to doing it because it's a Flames player, that's just team homerism and we're on a pure Flames board that doesn't have the combative "I need to stick up for my team at all costs against the other teams fans" dynamic.
Diving and embellishment is what is and it's fine to call it out like we do for every other team. It's an unfortunate, crappy part of our game that should be condemned whenever it happens so we don't turn into soccer. Soccer is a beautiful game that is ompletely ruined by bitchy player antics.

It was a dirty play for sure, but I don't see any risk of injury. He won't get suspended, still this doesn't help his reputation when the time comes.
