For the most highly decorated player in OHL history? This could be his most important record when it is all said and done.

If the oilers made Nugent Hopkins their captain today the entire NHL would be questioning the decision. Instead they named McDavid and the only people questioning it are on a Flames forum
So should they have named Hall captain three years ago? Should the Flames have named Iginla captain in his first year. "Future of the franchise" =/= "name him captain right now".

If you don't like making a more complete player captain, because he's young, you pick your best vet. Maybe Lucic despite the fact he hasn't played there before. Maybe a defenceman because he isn't comparable to McD. But IMO it's an unnecessary move to put additional pressure on a half year player.

And McDavid shouldn't be allowed to have one of them newfangled high numbers.

He should have picked 37 and paid his dues!

That's what you got from that? Not that a practical rookie might not benefit from having a little experience before having the pressure of captaincy? OK?

Not surprised, Oilers gonna Oil.

From the little I have seen of McDavid I'm still not getting the crazy hype and comparisons to Crosby. He will be a damn good player but comparisons to Seguin and Mackinnon would be more appropriate.

Man...seguin had 22 points in 74 games his rookie season. McDavid was over a point per game. The Crosby comparison is fine

Lol, so your Sig is this hilarious true statement that you blindly parade as an example of flame fan ignorance, and then you come in saying stuff like "you'll see"?

If you want anybody to see anything, maybe you should try not hammering your own credibility every single time you post.

Every kool-aid chugging oiler fan should just go ahead and have "you'll see" tattooed right on their forehead.

Wasn't Seguin stuck on the 4th line on the Cup champions while McDavid was given first line minutes on the 3rd worst team in the league?

I guess you do make a good point McDavid is better than Seguin but he is still not even close to Crosby who had ~1.25 PPG his rookie season.

OHL Awards

As best I can tell, Taylor Hall actually has more awards than McDavid in junior.

Taylor Hall (13 Awards)
OHL All-Rookie Team (2008)
Emms Family Award (2008)
CHL Rookie of the Year Award (2008)
OHL First-Team All-Star (2009, 2010)
Wayne Gretzky 99 Award (2009)
Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy (2010)
Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy (2009, 2010)
Memorial Cup All-Star team (2009, 2010)
Ed Chynoweth Trophy (2010)
CHL Second-Team All-Star (2010)

Connor McDavid (12 Awards)
Jack Ferguson Award - Top Pick in OHL Priority Selection Draft (2012)
Emms Family Award - Rookie of the Year (2013)
First All-Rookie Team (2013)
Bobby Smith Trophy - Scholastic Player of the Year (2014, 2015)
William Hanley Trophy - Most Sportsmanlike Player (2014)
Red Tilson Trophy - Most Outstanding Player (2015)
First All-Star Team (2015)
CHL Scholastic Player of the Year (2014, 2015)
CHL Top Draft Prospect Award (2015)
CHL Player of the Year (2015)

Two of Connor's awards are "Hey you got drafted first!" awards, which feel like they shouldn't really count, but they're on there so... whatever. Furthermore, as has been pointed out, Taylor Hall has tournament MVP awards, while Connor has Scholastic Player of the Year awards.

Either way, Taylor Hall has more (and better) awards than Connor.

Seguin/MacKinnon/Crosby Comparisons

The difficulty that we're going to run into when comparing these players is that, as some have pointed out, Seguin got fourth line minutes his rookie year while Connor got first line minutes. Because of that, the best way to compare these players is to look at their points/60. It's still not perfect, but I think it levels the playing field a bit. All the stats below are considers to be "x/60".

Seguin: 0.76 - 0.68 - 1.44
Hall: 0.63 - 0.94 - 1.57
MacKinnon: 0.72 - 1.35 - 2.07
Connor: 1.15 - 1.54 - 2.69
Crosby: 1.39 - 1.89 - 3.28

If we're simply looking at points/60 then Connor is a step above Seguin and Hall, a bit ahead of MacKinnon, but not quiet on the same level as Crosby. I'm not going to bother going through and looking at various rookie seasons to see who Connor compares to the closest, but it's certainly not Crosby.

Messier is on Hockey Central talking about this...of course. What are the odds McJesus wins his Leadership Award this year no matter how much the Oilers suck?
