If exhibition games performance carried to the regular season Schremp would have just signed a big UFA contract somewhere.

Valid points, but I don't think anyone is getting too carried away here saying he's going to win the Calder or anything.
He's just simply shown enough to get himself a 9 game audition at minimum. If he can perform well there then I don't think he's going to have any problem finding a fit on this team.

I wish I was able to watch him play more in order to assess this question properly, but I don't see how they can send him back when he's outplayed so many veterans on the team. He's going to be a valuable player this year. I expect some ups and downs at times, not unlike what Bennett went through last year, but with some less severe swings in play.
He's gonna play the whole year.

Agreed. In his previous games I could see arguments for both sides.
But after seeing the chemistry between Brouwer, Bennett and Tkachuck last night, all 3 guys using each other, not just 2 guys with a 3rd beneficiary.
Tkachuck s finish is also ahead of almost half the roster. I don't think there's anyway Tkachuck plays 1 more game in the CHL.

He still played better than everyone else on the Flames though. Even if the opposition was poor. It's not as if the rest of the team was also flying.

A fun part of the rebuild to date has been a "shiny new toy" every year. 13/14 we got Monahan, 14/15 we had Gaudreau with a sneak peak of Bennett, 15/16 was Bennett and Hamilton. I do think this season we get another with Tkachuk

I sure hope Flames management doesn't look at it that way. Effective player development means doing what's best for the player in the long-term, not what's best for the team in the short term.

Aww man... you're in for a long season. What if Chad Johnston gets some starts or Brower becomes a scoring stud or hell if Pribell comes back from injury and gets a spot.
Oh and if Shinkarrot makes the team or when he's called up or...
Yeah, gonna be a long season for those spelling nazi's

Maybe it's on the way to becoming a trademark.
A la Air Jordan's tongue-loll, as he elevated majestically to the rim.
Or Mike Singletary's eyes, two laser pinpricks in a backdrop of white.
Gary Player all in black. Or Gretzky's signature jersey-tuck into his hockey pants.
So what on earth is the deal with Matthew Tkachuk's mouthguard anyway?
The darn things seems to be everywhere but … in his mouth.
Sticking up here, jutting out there, clenched between the teeth its been designed to protect, hanging precariously.
"Some of management actually brought that to my attention earlier in camp,'' admitted Tkachuk ruefully, "but I respectfully I told them 'I'll try (to keep it in) as much as possible but it's a habit I've had since I was young.'
"I didn't really, uh, know it was that obvious. But people are talking about it."
|

"I know it seems every time I look, he's picking it up off the ice,'' joked Tkachuk's centreman, Sam Bennett.
"But whatever works, right?"

It's difficult to see him not at least opening the regular campaign here.
"Gully,'' said Tkachuk, "has put me in a position to succeed, so I'm playing with a lot of great players. I enjoy these tight games, low scoring games, where scoring chances are hard to come by."
Yessir, mouthguard in or out, Keith's kid is making it awful hard on the Flames to ship him back to day care for another term.
He's belongs here, with the adults.
"That's what he wants to do. That was his goal coming into camp,'' said goaltender Brian Elliott.
"This is a guy who's been around NHL locker rooms his whole life, his dad being such a good pro and such a leader.
"And I think you learn by osmosis.
"So when he comes into a locker room, he knows how it's supposed to go, he knows how he's supposed to act, and that's huge."

I don't disagree but there's no way anything he's shown so far is hinting that he'd be better off dominating children in the OHL.
I'd say he's looked better than both Monahan and Bennett did in their rookie preseasons. He's without a doubt earned his 9 games and I'm almost positive he'll stick.

Does Elliott count as a shiny new toy? He's obviously going to be fun to watch this year too!

I still stand by development #1.
In the back of my head though, I was always kinda-sorta thinking about his ELC and would it be healthier for the Flames "Compete Window" if we could push it another year.
I do believe next year we lose a lot of bad contracts and will likely see expanded (full time?) roles for Jankowski and one of Kylington / Morrison / Andersson. The Window seems REALLY open next year. So part of me wanted the Flames just to sit on Tkachuk for another season.
However I just realized that next year will be EVEN BETTER with a Tkachuk in the line-up with a year of NHL experience under his belt. If he keeps playing the way he's been playing, ELC be damned...we still have two seasons of that contract where we shoudl be REALLY good.

"Gully,'' said Tkachuk, "has put me in a position to succeed, so I'm playing with a lot of great players. I enjoy these tight games, low scoring games, where scoring chances are hard to come by."
That right there makes me really like this kid, humble and loves to be in the dirty places and the tight games. We need warriors like this to build a championship team and with him and Bennett taking the gritty shifts it opens up even more room for the Gaudreau-Monahan line offensively. We were to easy to play against last year, guys like Tkachuk fix that. I think there is zero chance he doesn't start the season with the Flames, if he falls off fast send him back, if not let then let it ride.

Hopefully it isnt burnt like the first season of Sams was. I think he just passed the 9 game mark after his surgery and subsequent return in the playoffs. Maybe like 12 games lol. As much as the Flames think of the ELC's and numbers I think thats something that would and should never be the only thing preventing an otherwise capable player who's proven he belongs from being on the team. (not that you implied that)

Well Peter Lou has declared Tkachuk makes the team.
"One word......... he makes it".
Can't argue with the "one word". It's science.
