I want an air bud like play of "no really, there's nothing in the rule books that stops them from putting the name of another city in their name, and the 'Las Vegas Toronto Maple Leaves' is technically different than the 'Toronto Maple Leafs' I'm afraid"

What does this have to do with political correctness? I think the whole political correctness thing is overblown. Thinking that there is some politically correct conspiracy behind this is a fantasy. There are much simpler explanations: these decisions are about money and only money.
This is why we get generic team names. Owners want to choose a name that really has no meaning so that they do not eliminate any potential consumers. With a generic name they can then build their brand on top of it, controlling what that brand becomes. They can groom their team's brand to try and only have positive and widely agreeable aspects to it, making it easy for a wide portion of the population to relate to their brand and incorporate it into their personal identity.
Names that come with a preexisting meaning, come with obstacles to fan adoption. People already have ideas and feeling associated with it, making it harder for the team to own and control the brand. When portions of the population find a name objectionable, it means that by choosing that name they have eliminated a portion of their potential customers, reducing their audience and the money they can make.
Joke team names are the worst kind of names with a preexisting meaning. They may be fun to talk about, but choosing one would be an incredibly bad financial decision. People who do not find the joke funny will not relate to the team, eliminating a lot of potential comsumers off the bat. Then as the joke ages and gets stale, it will become even more of an obstacle to consumer adoption. The team is left with a constant uphill battle trying to convince people to get past the name.

In other news, "Las Vegas" doesnt go with anything. Perhaps they shorten to Vegas and add some alliteration? The Vegas Venom/Vandals/Vipers/Villains/ Vaudevilles
Or, if they want to be accurate, the name should be Paradise... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naDCCW5TSpU

Since Diamondbacks would conflict with Arizona's MLB team, I think Vipers is a great secondary option. I really think the rattlesnake is an excellent symbol for hockey, as skating is mechanically similar to how a snake slithers along the ground. I also think the imagery of a rattlesnake is quite striking and iconic, depicting a Diamondback with diamonds, clubs, hearts and spades along it's back would really capture Las Vegas symbolically IMO.

I doubt they pick anything that isn't filtered and PC. Otherwise it'll be misconstrued and "controversy" will erupt immediately. That means nothing crime, mafia or dangerous in general. Military/army is ok though, you know, because 'Murica.

What kind of moron would think that the London Knights of the CHL are a "sub-team" of the Las Vegas Black Knights. That is as ######ed as thinking the Bruins and Cubs are associated because their teams are named after Bears.

Just talked to Bill Foley. Says report that all "Hawks" names are out is erroneous. Said "Nighthawks" remain very much in play. Story 2 come
This is a list of domains Foley's company has recently registered:

Interesting that they were considering just Vegas for the Red Hawks and Desert Hawks but not the NightHawks

vegasnighthawks.com was registered in 2014 by someone in BC, apparently.
So Foley would need to acquire that domain name.

Lots of people would. Not everyone is as in touch with NHL and CHL affiliations as we are.

No, lot's of people won't. Just because 2 teams have the word Knight in their name will not make people think they are affiliated in any way at all, especially since Vegas would be the Black Knights.
