Calgary would probably do a great job and makes some sense economically as the majority of the infrastructure required would have a useful post olympic life.
I went through one of those clickbait articles on the shabby state of some post olympic venues and it's crimnal what a waste of money those countries spent on 2 weeks of entertainment.
The 88 games provided venues that are stil in use, and are still helping develop our olympic athletes, that's pretty cool.

Skiing in Austria blows everything we have out of the water besides Whistler. Not even close.
Just google it:
https://www.google.ca/search?q=austr...EfCisQ_AUIBigB
Pretty sure it's like Italy too where their resorts are connected so you can literally spend a week going from resort to resort.

I don't disagree about Austria, but there are some fabulous hills in BC that certainly hold their own next to Whistler. I prefer riding at any of Fernie, Kicking Horse, Sun Peaks, or Revelstoke any day.

Revy yes, Fernie is decent but they've been hurting for snow the last two seasons. Kicking Horse is too flat imo, even if you do Stairway to Heaven it's only a handful of turns. Never skied Sun Peaks.
Revy and Whistler are truly world class resorts that can hold their own against anything in the world. Fernie or Kicking Horse aren't there imo.

Some countries certainly get into the Olympics business as a front for corruption and as such have no real use or plan for the venues after the games. I think Brazil is partially in that boat, Sochi as well.

Yeah, you are probably right about Kicking Horse, and it has been a few years since I have been to Fernie, so I can't comment on the conditions—it was my favourite hill in the late '90s. I think Sun Peaks is right there with Whistler and Revelstoke: it comprises a larger area than Revelstoke, but is not in the same vertical range; it offers a huge variety of terrain. My biggest problem with living on the coast is the snow quality, and Whistler is no exception to this. Yes they get tonnes, but half the time it is far too wet and heavy for my tastes. Living in Chilliwack, I can still do day trips to Sun Peaks, and I tend to opt for this over even affordable Mt. Baker, and most definitely Whistler.

It's excellent. I don't know if you have used this service before, but they have a great selection of accommodations for any budget. No packages, but a much wider selection of all sorts of different kinds of places to stay.
...God, I cannot wait for winter.

I was referring to the "Dinky" comments. Skiing in the Alps is like, the exact opposite of dinky. Terrain is different for sure, but far from dinky.

But you said skiing in Austria blows everything we have out of the water and that it wasn't even close.

I must have lucked out when I was in Fernie twice this winter. Conditions were great. Not much snow in the actual town, but on the mountain it snowed every single day I was there.

In order to be an acceptable location for the Olympic ski competitions, a mountain must have a minimum vertical drop of 800m.
Canada has 11 such ski hills, all in either BC or Alberta (which is why Quebec can't host the Olympics): http://www.onthesnow.ca/canada/stati...d=0&o=vertical
On the other hand, Austria has 12 hills that are more than 1600m: http://www.onthesnow.ca/austria/stat...d=0&o=vertical (I don't even feel like counting down to the 800m mark -- it's a lot).

Sorry, Kicking Horse is overrated. If you catch it on a pow day, cross your fingers it's on a weekday. Otherwise, you're either doing 2 hr laps, or lining up and hitting the same Stairway chutes, with a small window of decent light.
One of the only resorts in BC, where the locals buy the passes elsewhere.
Fernie has enough lift supplied terrain, to be one of the top 5 resorts in Canada for good reason.

What happens when you divide by people within 250km. This concept of bigger resort, or more elevation has almost nothing to do with quality.
What you want is good snow, no lines, and low cost.

We're not talking about quality per se. Places like Red Mountain are 10 times better than Whistler for those exact reasons (prices, lines, terrain), but it's not a world class resort.
The comment was that European resorts were dinky and that couldn't be further from the truth. Most of the resorts there blow what we have out of the water in terms of sheer size and scope.
Dinky resorts could very well be hidden gems.
