Prince appears at 6:48 and does some amazing funky guitar, something people probably aren't used to or expect that he plays.

So true. She's featured more in this version of Let's Go Crazy. It's an amazing performance.

Even limiting to guitarist/singer that's a pretty odd list.
They are both incredible guitarists, as well as successful singers and songwriters that sold a comparable amount of albums to Prince. Hetfields lead singing and innovative rhythm playing created an entire genre, his down stroke method of rhythm playing changed hard rock and inspired tens of thousands of musicians.

Greenday has sold 82 million records off Billie Jo's singing and guitar playing. He's also a very good guitar player, better than Prince technically they just choose to play their own style of punk rock (whick makes them one of the most successful punk rock bands ever). Seemed like very apt comparisons .

I don't know about "apt" comparisons. My guess is that both guys would be embarrassed by the suggestion. And going by album sales, they all totally suck compared to Celine Dion.

The comparison being guitar playing lead singers that all sold similar amounts of albums in a similar time frame... how is that so confusing? Celine Dion didn't play guitar. Just because they are different genres doesn't mean it's not music.

Here's a solo by Prince just because.

Yeah, I'm not confused by this deep discussion, I just think it's dumb to compare the guy from Green Day to Prince. And so would he.

When I was a kid, I used to brag that I owned the same kind of guitar that Billie Jo started out with (Aria) but wow...that is a simply ridiculous and unfounded statement that he was better than Prince in any way shape or form. Billie Jo isn't 10% the guitar player as Prince was. Even when I see his "good" solos, it's just boring, simple pentatonics.

I guess I didn't consciously realize how much I really appreciated him until he was taken away. truly sad and way too soon.

Rest In Peace Prince.

"Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
2 get through this thing called life

Electric word life
It means forever and that's a mighty long time
But I'm here 2 tell u
There's something else
The afterworld

A world of never ending happiness
U can always see the sun, day or night

So when u call up that shrink in Beverly Hills
U know the one - Dr Everything'll Be Alright
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how much of your mind, baby

'Cuz in this life
Things are much harder than in the afterworld
In this life
You're on your own

And if de-elevator tries 2 bring u down
Go crazy - punch a higher floor

If u don't like the world you're living in
Take a look around u
At least u got friends

U see I called my old lady
4 a friendly word
She picked up the phone
Dropped it on the floor
(Sex, sex) is all I heard

Are we gonna let de-elevator
Bring us down
Oh, no Let's Go!

Let's go crazy
Let's get nuts
Let's look 4 the purple banana
'Til they put us in the truck, let's go!

We're all excited
But we don't know why
Maybe it's cuz
We're all gonna die

And when we do (When we do)
What's it all 4 (What's it all 4)
U better live now
Before the grim reaper come knocking on your door

Tell me, are we gonna let de-elevator bring us down
Oh, no let's go!

Let's go crazy
Let's get nuts
Look 4 the purple banana
'Til they put us in the truck, let's go!

C'mon baby
Let's get nuts
Yeah
Crazy

Let's go crazy

Are we gonna let de-elevator bring us down
Oh, no let's go!
Go crazy

I said let's go crazy (Go crazy)
Let's go, let's go
Go
Let's go

Dr. Everything'll be alright
Will make everything go wrong
Pills and thrills and dafodills will kill
Hang tough children

He's coming
He's coming
Coming

Take me away!"

I like this song written by Prince. I only know it because of Jay & Silent Bob.

One thing I had huge respect for was the way Prince promoted and collaborated with really talented female musicians. The music business is pretty infamously bad in recognizing the talent of women, which makes Prince really stand out in that regard.

Here's a whole article on the topic for those interested, with plenty of samples.

Yeah he is. Hammett's solos stink.

Yeah after Dave Mustaine left Hetfield carried Hammett for Ride the Lightning. I can't say if Hammett is a better overall guitarist but Hetfield is a better guitarist at playing Metallica's style. Mustaine blows both of them away but that's a different argument.

Here I was thinking music was subjective and open to interpretation. Apparently nope, have to agree with everyone else. Thanks for clarifying. He definitely would have said it's dumb, not a single chance Prince would have said that's interesting... because he was such a close minded rigid thinker with no understanding of art.

That link and the video embedded therein could have been posted already. I'm not sure. I haven't gone through every single post in this thread. It's a video of Adam Levine doing one of the best Purple Rain covers I've seen. Ever. The video was captured in 2014 for Howard Stern's birthday bash but was only recently posted because of Prince's death.

This time last week, I could name maybe three Prince songs and I had never seen the movie Purple Rain. Decided to watch the movie on Friday and spent about 72 hours straight listening to Prince songs and covers and tributes from a lot of great artists. I have a much better appreciation of Prince now, I suppose. Bit sad to see the weirdo go.

Billie Joe Armstrong would think it's dumb.

Some people are more talented than others. Sure music is subjective and open to interpretation, but some things are just obvious.

Within the industry, many feel he was unmatched.

I don't think there has ever been such a prolific all-around musician, composer, arranger, band-leader and producer like Prince.

Frank Zappa is the only person that comes to mind.
