92 pt pace
Ortio is 6-3-2 in that stretch
nice to have solid goaltending and better team defence

For the way they played down the stretch I think the fairest lottery result would be

1. WPG
2. CGY
3. TOR

Make it happen hockey gods!

Late run aside, the Jets have no business being in 6th. They had a goalie put up .918 save percentage but refused to keep him on roster so they could tank. It's not a case of an Ortio, it's a case of them literally electing to send down the best goalie prospect in the world so they could pick up Matthews points.

I disagree. Hellebuyck is the same age as Gillies, he just left college one year earlier. IMO they had to rush Hellebuyck due to injury. Ideally he would be spending this entire year in the AHL. I agree with their decision to send him down. And it's in their best interest to revive Pavelec's value so they can potentially sucker somebody else into taking him (anybody but us).

Them keeping Hellebuyck up would be like us handing the starting reins to Gillies halfway through this season if he didn't need to have surgery. I sure wouldn't have been in favour of that, even if he looked alright. You can shell a young goalies confidence in the NHL in a lost draft lottery type season. I think the Jets made the right move sending him down and letting him have a 2nd year in the minors. I think its the right move for Hellebuyck's long term development and had nothing to do with tanking.

Blaming the goaltending on anybody but the goaltenders is absolutely asinine IMO. The two vets played well enough to help the Flames to almost 100 points last season, and the young guy was an AHL all star and looked decent to great in his limited call ups.

Treliving had no reason to believe all three would be simultaneously horrible to start the year, and if they were horrible because there were three of them on the roster then that's on them too. Talk about weak mental fortitude. Not Hartley's fault, not the teams fault, and certainly not Treliving's fault.
Nothing is isolated in hockey.

Goalies lose confidence and suck when the team can't score, or allow too many grade A chances, etc. The reverse is true as well. Defensemen make lots of bad reads when they're worried about their goalies not stopping a beach ball. How much is whose fault will be a circular argument until the end of time.

Coaching is important for systems and the biggest proof of those is usually special teams and 5v5 consistency. An historically bad PK is a a bad display of that coaching. So bad in fact, that tonight's 5 for 5 bumped them from 2nd worst in the last ten years to 4th worst. Underlying consistency at 5v5 is also a good tool to evaluate a coach. The Flames were certainly not consistent. Player selection is certainly subjective, but it's hard to say he did a good job of it IMO.
