Tweet Gaudreau and ask why he didn't miss practice on the road then.

The saltiness is hilarious. Unless there is a Minnesota like run, the playoffs are a pipe dream anyways. This is called accountability, and I love it. You know who has zero accountability? The Oilers. I see no problems in scratching 3 guys if they did something detrimental to the team atmosphere. Doesn't matter if you're Jooris or Gaudreau, same rules apply to all players. And if you decide not to discipline a player because you're (barely) in a playoff race, it starts a bad precedent. We have have a history of inmates running the asylum and it was terrible. You can bet Burke is 100% supporting Hartley with this decision.

The reason is to strike the iron while it is hot.

The kids will realize, hopefully, how through their actions they have let their team down.

We cannot turn into Edmonton up north or what happened with Philadelphia rumors when it became too late to fix (Carter and Richards)

Glad it happened at home since I'm going to the next road game. Whether they're scratched at home or on the road, it'll screw over some fans.

IMO the issue would be more for visiting teams in town a day early.

Here's what happened: Johnny was over at Lance and Sean's Super Bowl party. The boys thought it would fun to stick Johnny in the bedroom closet (immortalized last year). Johnny couldn't get out; the door was stuck. He was in there 1.5 hours, missed the halftime show, something he'd been looking forward to for months. Finally he managed to escape by crawling into a heating vent that connected to the kitchen. He dropped onto the kitchen floor, scowling and scratching like an angry mongoose. Johnny looked at the counter and spotted a toaster, well-used. He loaded the device with cookies that Lance's mom had baked, and turned it on "high." The thing exploded and the kitchen caught fire. A three-alarm blaze ensued, disrupting Super Bowl parties throughout the neighbourhood. Despite best efforts from the Calgary Fire Department, the house burned down. And making matters worse, the cherished CFD fireman's helmet was in the house at the time, and melted into a small blob. A Flames equipment guy was seen picking up the blob. "Thanks, Lance," he was heard to say, sarcastically.

Love the response but hate the reason if true.

Accountability is a necessity on a team. I'm sure Gio was consulted too.

Disconcerting if it's true that Hartley is losing the room. Not only for his sake but cause our dream core might have some issues too.
Losing the room? He is actually making sure he has control of it. You can't let the inmates run the show.

Maybe its just me but my respect for Bob Hartley just went up a couple of notches.

The overreactions in this thread are absolutely priceless. What message does it send to young players who screw up and don't get benched. Many star players have been benched by coaches before.

Hartley has proven to be a good coach and this is what good coaches do. Ensure EVERY player is reminded they are part of a team

Haha that's true but the Flames play 41 games at home a season. I'm sure you guys will survive Gaudreau being scratched for 1 game out of 41 games.

Thats not what that poster said who broke this news before Bob McKenzie. Seems to be connected to the team since the mods didn't delete his post.

That's what I was referring too.

Hilarious. I split season tickets. Buddy picked this game pretty early when we were splitting them.

Guess management is throwing in the towel. Makes us sellers at the deadline at least

This will suck for my pool but I'm just fine with it. You can't ignore this kind of stuff. And no, it isn't a soft punishment. It will sting, especially for Monahan, who is from Brampton.

I'm betting they react properly, too. It's a test of Monahan's future leadership capacity.

I also think the Flames still win. The Flames handled the Canucks OK and the second line was the catalyst, even though Monahan had a goal. Colborne might have a good game against the Leafs. Bennett and Frolik will get big minutes. The D will have to step up.

Objectively, doing it against Toronto shows greater integrity. It is the first game after the infraction, but also because the Leafs are similarly a non factor. Doing this against San Jose has far more impact on the playoff race for other teams.

I would say doing it tonight is for discipline. Doing it on Thursday would be for spite.

Also, serious question here. If it were Kris Russell being benched rather than Monahan/Gaudreau, would your reaction be the same? (I was going to use Wideman, but I think we both know the answer there.)

There's a time to rip it up and a time not to. If Gaudreau, Bouma and Monahan ripped it up at the wrong time (which IMO it is, you need your best players to be at their best if you're scrambling for a playoff spot) then I am all for scratching them.

I feel like Big Ern's presence is missed a bit in the locker room.

I understand your point of view that you deserve to see the best if you have paid for premium tickets. The issue is you won't be seeing the best necessarily. You will be seeing players who realize they do not have to necessarily be accountable. Scratching them for a game, embarrasses these players. Sends them a message that what they did is not acceptable. Sends a message to all players and prospects that you are not bigger than the team.

After all it is the management's job to manage. These players have often this year gotten the carrot through the praises. When they deserve the stick, they get the stick
