I dunno about that raise... Too risky. What if he gets himself suspended for procuring the cross-face chicken wing on the referee?

Just asking, what would everyone think of a 5 X 5 for Backlund once he is in his final year of his contract?

A steal. He's basically our 2012 Mike Richards in terms of role.

4.5x5 is what I'd like to see. I'm one of the biggest Backlund fans but I don't think he's worth more than $4.5.

I'd love it if BT could pull some wizardry and keep him. A couple of crap contracts really hurt you when you have a quality 3c that you grew yourself and cap dollars are scarce.

most of the crap contracts expire this summer though. Then there's only Stajan and Bouma left, and their deals expire at the same time as Backlunds, so it doesn't affect anything. Plus Backs is already making 3.575m per year, so it's not like Treliving has to find a lot of money to re-sign Backs ... finding 1m or so to give Backs his well-deserved raise shouldn't be too hard.

If Backlund is healthy again this season and puts up 40+ pts, there is no way they will get that. Just look at the 40-50 pt wingers we've signed. Backlund is a center so will command more than Brouwer and Frolik on the open market.

The next contract Backlund gets will be him at the age of 29. If he continues to keep up his two way play with offensive production sitting around 20/20 give or take, he'll probably get closer to 4.5m
Around 5 years, we'll probably see less than the 4.5m mark. I'm willing to bet that it'll be closer to 5+ years for less than 4.5m

I dunno... Put a better-than-average NHL starting goalie between those pipes and I don't think that's a goal.

The nice part about players like Backlund and Brodie are that they are essential to the success of their team, but don't have an extraordinary amount of leverage in negotiations.
I start liking Backlund a lot less if he's getting 6 million a year.
4.5 would seem reasonable, but I think there would be some BT magic sprinkled in on this deal.

Anywhere in the 4.5M-5.0M per range would be fine. Anything more and you trade him for assets. Bennett and Monahan are the top 2 guys for the future at C so it really depends on what you are willing to spend at the high end for your 3rd line C. For what Backs brings I think he is worth keeping even at those high numbers for a 3rd line C but any more than that and you thank Feaster he drafted Jankowski who I think will be an excellent 3rd line C.

I have a pretty good feeling that Backlund would take a discount to stay with the Flames. Honestly he seems more passionate about being a Calgary Flame than anyone else on the team. He loves the rivalries that we have, especially against Vancouver. I think 4-5 years at 5 mil would be a fair discount price.
This organization has done a lot to ensure Backlund became established as an NHLer and it was touch-and-go for quite a while due to his nagging injuries early on. I'm sure he recognizes that and seems eager to get this team into the playoffs every time he steps onto the ice.

Scoring Winger

Backlund, Stajan, and Bouma make $8.9M in total and they all expire at the same time. Seems like it'll be pretty easy to just reallocate more of the Stajan and Bouma money to Backlund. The only thing that could throw a wrench in that plan is if one of our RFAs (Jankowski, Klimchuk, Poirier, Shinkaruk) makes the team and earns a massive raise, but that's a good problem to have if it does happen.
I think we'd really regret letting Backlund go, even if he ends up slightly overpaid. Having a guy who can drive a line regardless of the wingers he's stuck with is so valuable.

I like Backlund but if he's asking for $5mil you give him the Kris Russell treatment. Unless I'm totally out to lunch, he's not a $5mil guy. $4-$4.5 is fine but $5 is too much.

I think Backlund's ask is at least what Frolik makes. Sure, Frolik was a UFA, but Backlund would easily get that on the open market. From that perspective, I would guess 4.3 would be the bottom and would be a home-town discount.

If you're fine with paying him 4.5, it's got to be pretty difficult to let him walk for 5. You generally wind up paying extra for a good player on a UFA deal.
