Saw it...the main issue for me was that it simply breaks down into a CGI-fest battle. Apocalypse is ridiculously powerful and overpowered. Things build into a big battle. The battle goes on for way too long. By the time the battle is over, you've forgotten a lot of the other parts of the movie that were actually descent. They also really missed the boat in terms of some great opportunities for character development.
I'd say it suffers from similar flaws as Avengers: Age of Ultron. But it's nothing like BvS, which suffered from fundamental flaws in its basic construction as a film.

As a biased X-Men comic and X-Men movie fan I was expecting a bit of disappointment. Did not leave the theater disappointed at all, really enjoyed this movie but it has greater impact if you follow the characters though the movies, comics or both. Probably not as strong as a stand alone but great as another piece of an ongoing saga.Cyclops, Jean Grey and Nightcrawler all were well done and fit in with the original older versions of the characters from prior films. Seeing this in 3D I would have to say it is one of the smoothest looking 3D movies I've seen in theaters, I liked Force Awakens in 3D but found to much blurriness in the background. Apocalypse seems to just execute its 3D better much like Days of Future Past did.

Also, I didn't like the portrayal of Apocalypse. They made him into a charismatic cult leader. The true character is supposed to have an unrelatable alien-like feel. He accumulates his subjects by either beating them into submission or promising unwordly power.
I think it's a really tough role to pull off, but they may have been better off with a full CGI character than an actor. Even a Darth Vader style mask and voice would have been better.

^ I agree with what was said here. I liked the movie, and don't agree with the reviews it's getting. Apocalypse does have its share of script and story flaws. But I don't think it brought a disservice to the characters like BvS did earlier this year. I didn't leave the theatre bewildered and angry about the future like I did back in March.
It's the worst of the new trilogy, which some may think it's a disappointment, but I like the direction the franchise is taking. If this is the last JLaw, Fassbender, and McAvoy entry I think they'll be fine. With that being said the best scenes were anything involving Magneto which shouldn't be much of a surprise. The film suffers in the second half when he becomes Apocalypse's henchmen. Also the Sweet Dreams scene with Quicksilver was fun, but a tad overdone.
The biggest problems I had were with Apocalypse himself. His "plan"... well I don't think there really was one. To reshape the world in his image or something? It seems to me he was spending all his time chilling out in Cairo. Also there was way too much fluctuation with his powers (as there was with other characters). He was able to handle all the X-Men himself before Jean Grey came in. It was so obvious that Magneto was going to be his downfall. I wish they could've used him better as that flaw was glaring.
There is also so many continuity issues with these movies, but it's almost best to not think of those. Wolverine's cameo was also not the best. I'm glad he made an appearance, it just could've been done better.
I do like the new cast, and was impressed with Turner's turn as Jean Grey. I wonder if they plan on doing another Dark Phoenix Saga after Last Stand's turn was so off. They're doing a 90's version next time around, what other stories could they turn to?

Damn would have rather waited for on demand for this one.. I love X-Men but it just was not good. I have a buddy who worked on this film and he warned me about it ahead of time given some of the ... hrmm.. behind the scenes problems that went on. I still went in expecting to enjoy all the characters at least even if the story sucked.. but I found the only one I actually liked was Sophie Turner and I was most likely just blinded by my love for the Starks!
3/10 where as DOFP was a 9/10 for me.

I really didn't like the way they comboed Magneto and Apocalypse's power into something that was way over the top. It was just way too much. Giving him the power to destroy every city on the planet at once? But yes, very obvious that Magneto having a change of heart was going to be the downfall of Apocalypse.
It seems as though every superhero movie now feels the need to have battles in the midst of some kind of city rubble.
As far as the future goes, they are apparently looking into the space side of things. That could involve the Dark Phoenix saga as the Shi'ar were heavily involved in that.

One of my favourite battle scenes to this day is still Thor, Cap and IronMan having it out in that forest in Avengers. I agree that some varied battle back drops would be nice.

It's difficult for me to rank the X-Men movies. The first half of First Class was phenomenal. I'm still disappointed Fassbender never got a Magneto spin-off. They wouldn't have needed 250-300 million dollar budget for that.
If I had to rank all the X-Men titles today this is how I would place them. So Apocalypse is middle of the road.
1. X2
2. Deadpool
3. X-Men First Class
4. X-Men Days of Future Past
5. X-Men Apocalypse
6. X-Men
7. The Wolverine
8. X-Men The Land Stand
9. X-Men Origins Wolverine

I don't know why but I really strongly disliked Days of Future Past, and reading the reviews of this one makes me think that I'm probably going to wait until it hits Shaw on Demand so I don't have to spend a bunch of money on it.

One of the strange things about the X-Men movies is that they have all, including Last Stand and Origins, been excellent for portions of the movie. Only DOFP and X2 really were quite good overall and only have minimal weak spots.
It is crazy to me how each movie has had so much potential and usually lost all of it in the third act.
As I often do, I'll point back to the areas of the comics that are successful and that I think the movies miss out on most frequently. Characters we care about, inter team conflict, saving a humanity who hates and fears them.
A good villain IMO is usually just a bonus. What's more important is caring why the hero(es) are fighting and the sacrifices/challenges they face to succeed.
I think Apocalypse strikes me as a good villain if he's chasing power and they are trying to prevent a reawakening of sorts. I tend to agree that overpowered villains are boring.
I'm still gonna see the movie, I just think I already know what I won't like about it.

Sounds like it is in for a lower than expected debut at the box office. Competition from Alice and poor reviews most likely.

Should be going to this with a buddy of mine on Tuesday. Despite the less-that-stellar reviews I think it'll have some strong scenes like BvS had.

God, this was atrocious.
Terrible choice for a villain. The movie was nonsense, full of plot holes (how does Apocalypse keep the powers of the bodies he leaves?)
Terrible

I think another problem facing this movie is the start of some super hero fatigue perhaps.. first we had BvS to go see, whatever you opinion of it is you still sat through it, then Civil War, which was awesome.. and now this movie. By the time I got to X-Men I was just like OK.. ill go see it I guess. So third movie in 2ish months (or 4th movie in 3 including deadpool if you want to go back that far), expectations are decent but after seeing Civil War so recently it is hard to top. I think this movie still definitely had its flaws, but I think it is also a combination of senses overload and having to follow Civil War.
I think the fact nobody has really cared enough to make a spoiler thread to discuss the plot line or anything about it also shows just how disinterested we all are. I took enough positives away from it to still look forward to seeing most of the cast in another one, but they need to start moving away from the Magneto/Charles struggle and focus more on the X-Men, 3 movies was enough.

I feel like this may have done better if they moved the release date into June or July, or even August / Sept really.
