Some great analysis by Bourne here, chalking up the go-ahead goal last night basically to bad luck. Can't say I disagree - while it may seem like Jooris/Hamilton got crossed up and covered the same guy, the system dictates that play and 9-10 times that puck bounces harmlessly away.

After Grant made the decision to eliminate a potential Stoll-to-Yandle second pass, Jooris was more or less flawless in his reads.

The Rangers got the puck in, got solid possession, and made the Flames defenders make some choices. From where I sit as a former winger, they defended pretty damn well. They just got some bad luck.

He is much better than "slightly above average" defensively, and is the fourteenth highest scoring forward from his draft class, despite having been drafted #24. For a player who "can't score" his near 0.5 pts/game career scoring average seems awfully impressive. He is not really a top-six player, but is under all circumstances a useful NHL player who would be a fixture in the top nine on any team in the League.

Hiller has to make two spectacular saves and despite this the Flames can't get a stick on the puck and Klein just throws it at the net for a goal.

1. Panic in our own zone, blindly throwing the puck away.
2. A clogged up neutral zone where the opposition badly outnumber the Flames and thus can quickly transition.
3. Godawful coverage in our own zone, especially in front of the net. Getting outmuscled by pretty much everyone.
4. Leaving our goaltending out to dry after they have to make a spectacular save.
5. Letting this breakdown lead into further breakdowns until the game is out of reach.

Hartley can bag skate this group into the ground. It ain't gonna solve nothing. The compete is there for the most part, we are just getting outcoached and it's killing team confidence/morale.

Sure Hiller let in a soft goal or two, but that was after the team in front of him pretty much gave up. Our goaltending needs to be better, but that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Flames' problems.
I saw it much simpler. Hiller lets out a terrible rebound. None of the other stuff happens if that doesn't.

Bottom line is Flames played darn good last night, and the Rangers goalie was better than the Flames goalie.

That bad rebound was on the second save of two top-notch scoring chances. Hiller had a fraction of a second to make that second save and thus was out of position for Klein's subsequent shot. No goalie in the league is gonna stop all three of those shots in less than a second and that scoring chance was heads and shoulders above anything the Flames mustered offensively last night. So "beter team" doesn't mean much to me in that context.

You're right. Some goalies would cover up after the first or second save, especially considering they weren't all that impressive of shots. Or at least control the rebound so it doesn't end up right in the slot ready for them to shoot it a third time.

Similar to why nobody gave credit to Butler for blocking shots, but do praise Russell for it. Butler only had to block so many because he kept giving it back to the opposition.

No, the problem with that play was the bad rebound into the slot on the first (very weak) shot. That is what caused the panic to ensue. And that is what also could have been / should have been avoided.
