Very nice deal for both sides. Age put the negotiations in a weird spot. That's the problem with being a late bloomer. I thought it would be around $7.5 so I'm happy with the amount. I'm also fairly confident that Gio can be an effective player into his late 30s.
Honestly not too concerned about the cap pushing out good players. There are a lot of options before you get to guys like Hudler, Russell and Wideman. Raymond, Engelland, Jones, Bollig, Smid, both goalies can all be moved in various ways/come off the books to clear space for the young guys.

So I suppose 2.4 billion dollars per season is such a great deal!

Either way, it's too bad it's not front loaded as it'd be nice to know he'd be much more tradeable if we're pushed up against the cap in a couple years. I just want to avoid a situation like Boston where cap issues forced them to trade their young studs (Seguin, Hamilton, Lucic) because there wasn't a huge market for a high-priced aging dman (Chara).
|
I think the lack of front loading is part of setting the internal cap. If Gio was getting paid $8-9M in the first few years, that could be used as the limit values for monny / johnny / Bennet contract extensions.

If he stays healthy and had another Norris calibre year, then yes $8 million would be very doable. If he gets hurt again and only plays 60 games or his play reverts to a pre-2013 type season he would be lucky to get $7 million for more than 5 years.

Maybe but I was talking specifically about fitness level and ability to still play at a high level late in your career. Whether or not Gio is healthy is a different argeument than if he is actually capable of playing at a high level. Obviously you wan't both but being healthy is kind of irrelevant if you suck. The fact that we hear similar things about Gio and Iginla's fitness could be promising given that Jarome is still playing and contributing at a pretty high level. Gio has injury troubles already so hopefully they do not continue throughout this deal but to me fitness is the most important because there is no point in being healthy if you can't play.

I would assume that it does include one of some kind. It seems pretty standard these days when stars sign long term deals.
Happy with this extension. Who knows where he will be at the tail end of the contract in terms of effectiveness, but if he looks after himself and can stay healthy, there is no reason why he still won't be a good player by then.

Of course...but the Canadian dollar was a lot higher when the initial demands came out I believe... The lower the Canadian dollar the happier he will be as will all Canadian players... In the end, well done Brad

Not really.
My guess is the Flames opened at $5 million, and Gio opened at $9 million, and both knew from the start they would settle around $7 million.
The term is likely where things went back and forth.

I recognize that cap will go up but I don't think it's going to go up to the point it makes a 4 or 5 defenseman worth 7 million.
I disagree that he doesn't play a hard on his body style. He's very physical. He's also missed a large chunk of the last couple years due to injury. He's also only started playing top pairing minutes in those years.
Again, I'm not disagreeing that this is probably the best we could have hoped for, but I think they handcuffed themselves a bit.

This is a good contract. I'm extremely happy with everything Treliving has done so far but it's just too bad the oilers have all but won the cup the next few years...I guess we're going for the consolation prize. I mean the oilers have a few Gios and McGiveitarestalready so we can't compete.
Looking at this contract moving forward, I think it actually gets better. Gio has shown he's a Norris calibre defenseman and a great leader, having him on the team long term just means the Flames will have something every team wants for a long time.
wake me up when the season starts.

I'm surprised they didn't front load it. It's kind of a win-win. Give Gio more money now as a reward for his current elite level, better net present value of money, with an added bonus of the Canadian dollar being awful so getting a huge bonus. Of course this is expensive from the Flames management point of view. But, then in 4-5 years, who knows where CAD will be, and if his play has dropped way off, we could have unloaded him to a Phoenix/Florida type team who could use the low salary/high cap to reach the floor. More flexibility for the team.
That said, absolutely thrilled with the contract. In Treliving We Trust!
