Just got back from the Knights-Spits game and man it was draft prospects galore.

My thoughts on someSorry 4 bad grammar)

Tkachuk- He's good. Not game changer good though. He was overshadowed by Marner and especially Dvorak who was the best player on the ice. People compare him to his dad but he's not that type of player. Former knight Perry might be a better comparison.

Max Jones- Max is the big bruising throwback power forward. Scores, hits and fights. Has the bloodlines as well as his dad played a number of years in NHL. If we drop to 9-15 range he's just the winger we need IMO.

Mikhail Sergachyov- The player who impressed most relative to expectations. Great 2-way defenceman. being compared to Provorov. I think hes the 2nd best D in this draft and woud be happy to have him 6-12.

Olli Juolevi- Another skilled defencemen from overseas. His puck carrying and passing were a bt better than Mikhail's but a couple steps behind him in his own zone. He's being compared to Olli Matta. Id be happy with him after say #12ish

Logan Brown- I really like him just perhaps ot for the Flames. 6'6 center that has sublime puck skills but needs to be more physical. Being compared to Bjugstad. If he was a RW I'd be all over him but hes not better than our 2 guys. again 8-20 range.

Logan Stanley- K.Kanzig with actual elite ability. Absolute force out there and has an offensive game as well as he rushed the puck up the ice numerous times. 6'7 220 pounds but can move pretty well. I'd be in on him in 2-3 round.

Cole Carter- Small winger (5'9) who is a firebug. Could be another Mangiapane type. 6-7 round I'd take a shot.

Luke Kirwan- I've seen him in the 1st round in some mocks. Based on the 6-7 times I've seen him I wouldn't touch him in the first 150.

Biggest thing I came away with is this isn't a deep draft. While these players are good I don't think there #1 line/dman good. I think Tkachuk/Jones/Brown can be 50-65 point guys and Sergachyov/Juolevi will be #2 or 3 defenceman. Problem is those guys are all projected lottery picks. I'm hoping if we miss playoffs we get a top 4 pick and more of a game changer.

Personally I think that was already a long time ago in a teenager's life, but I'm not going to say it means nothing. It will make scouts look into his current attitude more closely, but if it looks like he learned his lesson, I don't think it will affect his draft position much if at all.

I don't see any work ethic related problems, just an inflated teenage ego, but in the end you'd have to be in the team with him to really evaluate. In a way a cocky attitude isn't necessarily entirely negative in a player of his type.
I trust the Flames to do their due diligence re Laine's character 'issues'.

If that's true then you'll need to be in on him at least in the mid to late 1st. Giant defensemen with actual puck skills go early. Samual Morin... showed up on a lot of mocks and various media/industry lists as an early 2nd rounder... ended up 11th overall in 2013.

Logan Brown is an interesting player. A friend of mine said he has incredible acceleration for a big guy. He said he is up to top speed within two or three strides, but he doesn't have the best top end speed. Not that he isn't fast, just isn't mindblowingly fast. Also has a wicked wrister. As for general hockey IQ, he plays a complete 200ft game and is continuously one of the first guys on the puck, no matter where he is in relation to the puck. Doesn't seem to run out of gas. He said he looks like he could skate there whole 60 and not look out of place.

The Vees come through town a bunch, but I haven't had a chance to check out Tyson Jost. My dad goes to the Smokies games all the time and said he is incredible to watch. I've got no other input on the matter.

It's kind of fun to salivate over Matthews, but come on. It's the Flames. Everyone knows they'll win some meaningless games at the end of the season to end up 5th last and 3 teams behind them all win the lottery.

I don't know much about Matthews but what level of prospect is he suppose to be? Would he be in that Tavares, Stamkos caliber range?

He'd be in serious... serious conversation with McDavid and Eichel. At lest thats how McKenzie has been painting the picture.

There are those who say he might have been picked ahead of Eichel if he was born a few days earlier.

I assumed there would be the Eichel comparison because hes a big American kid but if the actual talent is on that level that sounds promising even if our odds of landing him are slim. Still nice to think about.

A feature on Logan Brown, for those interested:

Quote:
“The OHL fits my style of game and my personality,” said Brown, who was traded from the IceDogs to Spitfires in August 2014. “It wasn’t that tough of a choice. My whole life growing up I was always a Canadian boy at heart and I knew if I had the chance I would play in the OHL and hopefully one day for Canada at the World Juniors.”

Matthews numbers last year at the USAU18 team were the best of all time. Better than Eichel's and better than Patrick Kane's.

His line of Tkachuk, Bracco and himself were absolutely dominant.

What really paints the picture is how some of his other teamates are doing this year. Colin White and Christian Fischer are having huge years in the NCAA and OHL respectively. They had 54 and 64 points last year. Matthew's had 116.

If he plays in the CHL i think he is the points leader easily. He's a legit first overall not Oiler 1st. I think he's same level as Stamko's/Tavares.

The thought of having Monahan, Matthews, Bennett, and Gaudreau in out top 6 just makes me salivate. I think Bennett, Matthews, and Johnny all have potential to be elite forwards.

I will admit I don't have the greatest knowledge on these guys. However from the film and scouting I've personally done.

Matthews
Chychrun
Puljujarvi
Laine

These guys all have the tools and skill sets to be game changers in my opinion.

To be fair I may have caught Tkachuk on a off night.
Most experts do have him with the above tier. Those 5 are quite a bit ahead of everyone else according to reports. (with Alexander Nylander closing in, Although that's probably a bit of Toronto media hype machine since they drafted his brother)

Me either. I've been focusing more on Laine and Puljuarvi to be honest. Tkachuk as well. If we pick between 2-5 I think we chose one of those guys.
