That would be one. The general condemnation of homosexuals in scripture (although not very strong) would be another.
|
My point was to make you be specific about what Christian doctrine you are accusing of being hateful of homosexuals? The main doctrines of Christianity tend to focus on the marriage aspect, which has more to do with the institution of the family, and its contribution to the fully-realized and dignified treatment of human beings than to anything else.
I think most Christian's tend to find certain lifestyles repulsive, but often for good reason. This can apply to any number of people, regardless of their specific sexual orientation.
It is a pity that certain, well-publicized sects of Christians have been so stupid in their opposition in general to homosexuals. In this woman's particular case, I remember reading that her conversion had been quite recent.
Quote:
Yeah, but I'd be less willing to attribute that to positivism.
If you're going to reduce Western morality to Christianity, wouldn't you also have to take it one step further and include Judaism?
|
When you mean positivism, do you mean behaviouralism, or more recently, the trend that stupidly assumes we can discern morality through neural scans? What do you mean by positivism, exactly?
Yes to Judaism. Although, the Christian story of redemption is far more universal than Judaism. That is why Jewish people differentiate themselves from Christians.
Besides, who said anything about reducing? Anytime where we long for justice for a poorly treated group we are tapping into the cultural regard for human dignity, and compassion for the suffering. This is the opposite of reduction.
Personally, I feel that a great deal of admiration should be felt for homosexuals who seek to alleviate their loneliness through life-long, dignified relationships, or selflessly sacrifice their independence to provide a home for a child who otherwise would have none.

I thought this was fake news from the Onion originally. Apparently not.
http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2...is-report-says
Pope Francis met 'anti-gay' Kentucky clerk Kim Davis
Pope Francis allegedly thanked Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who refused to issue same-sex marriage licences on religious grounds, for her courage when the pair had a private meeting during his trip to the US.
The encounter will likely be seen as a personal endorsement of Davis’s actions by the Argentinian pontiff, and seems to contradict the general tone of the pope’s public remarks during his tour of the US, when he avoided issues such as abortion and gay marriage, and emphasised the need for mercy and goodwill.

Seriously? She is recognizable for one thing. One. And you're suggesting he saw her out of the millions of other Catholics in US and it had nothing to do with that? Ok then

US Liberals last week: Pope is awesome!
US Conservatives last week: Pope is a communist!
US Conservatives today: Pope is awesome!
US Liberals today: #### the Pope
I mean Catholic dogma hasn't changed has it? This Pope is certainly better with the media and crowds than most, but the religion is still trapped in the dark ages for the most part. That he is for doing something about climate change has more to do with it being an existential threat rather than him being a moderate or even liberal.

You're right, he probably told her to start using condoms during pre/post marital sex.

And I wouldn't want to get in the way of you identifying Catholics as victims.
However, rhetoric aside, what are your views of Davis having an audience with the Pope? Just bad optics? Would you have advised for or against it? This stuff doesn't happen in a vacuum, the world is watching, for better or for worse.

And it has nothing to do with Catholicism.
Any ideology that is actively fighting against the rights of other people deserved to be shamed for such things. Christianity, Islam, Hindu, etc.. it doesn't matter. If you're an Atheist that for some reason fights against same-sex marriage, you deserve shame too.
It's really just about being a decent person regardless of what your beliefs are.

Bad optics, but as it wasn't publicized or commented upon by the Vatican, merely acknowledged, I think it is irresponsible for reading into it too much. But as I said, don't want to get in the way of the Two Minutes of Hate for Catholics that so many on this board reflexively enjoy.

I think it is irresponsible of the Vatican to not get out in front of this and know who they are dealing with.
Did they not see her leave jail?
I have no doubt that her version of event or interpretation of message might differ with what the pope delivered.

Again, it has nothing to do with Catholicism.
If this was a Buddhist who was refusing marriage licences, and they were subsequently (allegedly) thanked by the Dalai Lama, the reaction would be the same.
People are upset that the act of restricting a group of people's rights is being thanked by a highly influential figure. Religion, race, creed, sports team, whatever, doesn't matter.

The nature of not allowing people they perceive as different access to the same rights and privileges they themselves enjoy. People aren't hating on the Pope for being Catholic. They're hating on him for publicly condoning the restricting of rights of an entire group of people based on who they like to share to their bed with.

Maybe the Pope was discussing divorce with her. You know, the divorce that is still not allowed by strict Catholic dogma.
But wait, being anti-divorce, anti-choice, anti-contraception, pro-patriarch, and anti-gay isn't enough to make it reasonable to decry Catholicism as a religion mired in antiquated attitudes and bigotry. After all, at least there's no more witch-burning!

I think the question of why the Pope met with her, what did they talk about and how you, as a Catholic, feel about it are legit discussions. As a non-Catholic, all I can think of is, "What the hell was he thinking?" Seriously wondering what you think.
It seems you are deftly avoiding the topic with the hate inferences. It is "irresponsible to read into it too much", but you are ready to paint CP with the anti-Catholicism brush? Pretty rich.
