Hope so, but I doubt we land any more UFA Dmen.
Morrison and Nakladal is probably it for us.

Did signing Morrison hurt our chances of getting Reilly or Russo?
Either way, I guess it was good to play it safe and go with Morrison.

I don't think so, I think Treliving just doesn't promise something he can't honor. Morrison might just be a better fit.

It may have, but I agree with you. I would much rather have Morrison than a chance at Russo or Rielly.

I think having Tyler Wotherspoon, Brett Kulak, Ryan Culkin, Patrick Sieloff, Brandon Hickey, Rushan Rafikov, John Gilmour, and Keegan Kanzig hurt our chances of getting Reilly. We have a lot of left-handed D prospects and while I know people like to believe we just drafted 8+ busts, you have to imagine management wants these guys to succeed and isn't going to just throw them under the bus by offering a guy like Reilly playing time he hasn't earned..
THe Morrison signing might've hurt our chances at Russo, but at the same time they're such different players. One is a big two-way defenseman, kind of reminds me of Seabrook, the other other seems to be a PP specialist like Wisniewsky.

Agreed, this is probably what happened:
1) Flames expressed an interest to the agent;
2) Agent indicated player wanted guarantee top 6 to sign in Calgary;
3) Treliving hangs up the phone.
Flames identity built on earning your ice time, can't just give it out to some spoiled rich kid.

With Edmontons top 6 and defensive depth. He could potentially be their number 1 by Christmas.

McKenzie adds on TSN that the 9 team list that Reilly is meeting with may be expanded.
So there is a chance!

I wonder if Mike Reilly knows who Justin Schultz is?

You mean the borderline NHLer that just signed a one year deal worth 3.7 million? Pretty sure that's the reason the Oilers are on his list.

Sorry, it was tongue in cheek. I meant more how Schultz was every bit as hyped a Reilly with just as much promise and signing with Edmonton has left his career stalled and underdeveloped. If I were Reilly, I'd look at Schultz as a cautionary tale. I'd rather have a long, healthy career than take the chances with the Oiler's atrocious record with player development.

I knew what you meant, sorry if I came off wrong, I agree with your reasoning.
Hard to say if Reilly is thinking long term or for a quick payday though. If he was looking for long term, I don't understand why he wouldn't just stay in Columbus.

The smoke is that he is headed to Chicago.
That would be a great opportunity for him as he would get to play on a contender that badly needs cheap NHL depth on defence.
Playing for Chicago could set him up both short term and long term. Gets his NHL money quicker, and if he plays decent will get a tonne of coverage playing for the NHL media darlings, setting him up for the big payday.

Jeez, if the Hawks do land Reilly, they're set up pretty nicely n the event of moving or not re-signing Brent Seabrook. They have Pokka, TVR and then potentially Reilly to develop as a replacement.

I hate this way for college kids to jump to UFA. THe kid should do the right thing and sign with the Jackets.
