Personally I think this was Katz telling MacT that is was Eakins or him who's gone. I don't think MacT wanted to but his job was on the line.
Pure speculation on my part, could be wrong, but that's my guess as to what happened.

I’ve been enjoying the morning since I heard the news. What a joke that franchise is. I can’t actually disagree with the firing as Eakins seems over his head, has no idea how to fix things and I assume has lost the players. That said, why now? What possible outcome is an improvement on the season by doing this today and not after the season? It’s a positive move (the firing) but like all Oilers moves in the past few years it seems like there is no plan in place after the move is made.
I can only assume it’s like the hiring of Eakins. MacT sees a guy he wants (maybe Paul MacLean after Ottawa let him go) and makes the immediate grab fearing another team will snap him up. However, just like with the Kruger fire/Eakins hire, the Oilers fail to recognize no one wants these coaches like they do. Perhaps they realized there was only one former Head Coach still on the payroll and wanted to bump that up.
I can see the press conference in June now:
“Before we begin I would like to say hello to all the Tier One fans here in attendance today, and begrudgingly acknowledge the Tier Two fans that will maybe see this on SportCenter or read it in the paper tomorrow. The Edmonton Oilers are very pleased to announce that we have come to terms with a new and innovative coaching staff. This group may not have NHL coaching experience, or any coaching experience, but as my best pal Kevin likes to say, they know a thing or two about winning! We’re not sure yet who is head coach, but we all know that doesn’t really matter. Please join me in welcoming the Edmonton Oilers coaches for the 2015-2016 season: Mike Krushelnyski, Dave Semenko, Esa Tikkanen, Andy Moog and new goalie coach Paul Coffey……… Pardon me folks, the coaching staff will be out for photo availability as soon as they are done signing Darryl Katz’ old jerseys and hockey cards. FYI this will be a photo availability only, any questions will need to be directed to our PR Director/President/Czar/Super-friendly-cool guy Mr Kevin Lowe. Thank you.”

I wonder if Dallas threw his windbreaker on the ice when he found out.

Yup. Eakin's has been just going through the motions. He checked out a long time. I think it would be more rude to make him work through the holiday season first before firing him.

I love this move. Hopefully it lights a fire under the oilers asses and they go on a 10 game winning streak. Saving mceichel. Also this move buys Mact and Lowe at least 2 more years.

This is awesome...I'm alone in the office for the rest of the day, this hasn't happened since the last oilers presser. I'll be able to watch it and laugh my butt off and not have to answer to anyone lol.
Someone please give the link asap, this is a late birthday present for me, thank you oilers!

You can wake me up with a knock at my door and a pink slip on Christmas morning if you're going to keep paying me my actual salary for another two and a half years.
Put it under the Christmas tree in a gift box....put it in my kids stocking....wrap it around the bottle of Bailey's...send a strip-o-gram.

The fact MacTavish is appointing himself means:
a. They didn't phone Paul McLean; or
b. They phoned him and he said no.
In either case, funny and no good.
