It's not even a funny joke. It's just an offensive comment brushed over with green to get away with it.

UN puts out a stark warning that Ebola must be controlled with the next 60 days or else we will see a situation of increase growth where the UN has no plans for containment
Quote:
"The WHO advises within 60 days we must ensure 70% of infected people are in a care facility and 70% of burials are done without causing further infection," said Anthony Banbury, the UN's deputy ebola coordinator.
WHO assistant director general Bruce Aylward told a news conference the total was expected to top 9,000 by the end of this week.
He said the death rate from the current outbreak had risen to 70% from about 50%.
When asked how the situation could develop in the next two months, he warned: "We anticipate the number of cases occurring per week by that time to be somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 per week."
He urged: "We either stop ebola now or we face an entirely unprecedented situation for which we do not have a plan."

Second health care worker in Texas tests positive.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...ticle21104013/
Quote:
A second Texas healthcare worker who treated the first patient in the United States to be diagnosed with Ebola has tested positive for the disease, the Texas Department of State Health Services said in a statement on Wednesday.
The worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, who cared for Thomas Eric Duncan, was immediately isolated after reporting a fever on Tuesday, the department said.

How are these health services workers getting infected? Has it gone airborne? Otherwise their procedural methods of handling patients need a serious review.

If Ebola went airborne it would make the spanish flu seem cute and harmless.
So no, its not airborne, just sounds like someone screwed up.

I'm surprised that this hasn't been spoken about publicly yet. I'm far from an alarmist, but the spread of Ebola is already critical within a large region and is now starting to spread to other countries and continents.
Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting a "Shut the door and leave 'em be" policy. I think that the world needs to fully mobilize and spare no resources in containing the disease immediately. But as part of the containment strategy, I would certainly understand restrictions on international travel.
The UN's recent warning that this is on the verge of becoming something we don't have a plan for should terrify people. The plans that we do have aren't really working (infections are spiking, death rates climbing), so what happens if the response becomes ad-hoc?

Sounds like swineflu/H1N1/avian flu, etc. that comes around every few years.
Seriously, 1 person in the US has been confirmed infected.
Really seems like the media's latest agenda to keep the people scared.

Seasonal flu kills anywhere from 3500 to 40,000 people a year in the US.

Human Trials of a vaccine are underway. In the extremely remote possibility that Ebola becomes anything near even SARS in 2003, I think you are going to see that vaccine get mass produced very quick.
If Nigeria got their outbreak under control, I am sure we can. The issue in these African countries has more to do with local traditions, mistrust, and superstitions. I don't think many people in Canada would be openly attacking the vehicles carrying bodies for cremation so they can be retrieved.
At some point the people of these countries need to put aside these things to have any chance to succeed. I am not blaming them, but maybe a much worse outbreak will wake people up there that like Nigeria they need to work together to beat this thing.

While I agree its seems like fear mongering that the total infected seems to be climbing by the hundreds weekly, and they for 2 months now have continued to warn that it will start climbing by the 10's of thousands weekly, any week now.
Unlike all of the others you brought up that were fatal for less 5% who had pre-existing conditions. This strain of Ebola has a 70% death rate, and kills otherwise healthy people. If it hits as hard as any of those did, we should all be afraid.

So how many medical staff are going to want to treat Ebola patients soon if the precautions aren't going to work? In the Spanish case there are reports of nurses not wanting to treat the patients now because "Not all of them are saints" and the training/precautions were inadequate. With a larger outbreak I wonder how well a western hospital will fare.
Lots of people at the ER concerned about it fear or not, few were gonna go home rather than staying in the hospital if there had been a case.

As long as its not airborne, its not going to be an epidemic. Especially not in north america.
Will some people die? Maybe, but it isnt going to be in large amounts in North America/Europe unless it mutates to an airborne virus.

Like lots of others have pointed out before me, a disease changing it's infection vector like that is very unlikely.

Exactly my point. Its the big bad for the 2014/2015 winter seaosn in north america.
Now Africa on the other hand? There is a legitimate worry for those countries. I just pray this "expiremental" Canadian Ebola vaccine is legit and is donated to Africa and not used as a new drain on healthcare for scared North Americans.
