Bought my dad's from http://www.cpapmachines.ca they were half the cost of what the local sleep clinic was selling them for.

RHS may be able to give you a good price on a refurbished one if they have any kicking around. That's what I did for my first machine and it lasted five years. New mask and hose, of course, but the machine looked brand new, functioned great, and I think I was charged $800 or something for everything.

$200 a month is way too much.

New Phillips with heated tube and humidifier and a mask for about $1200. Exactly as advertised and they shipped fast. When it arrives you should book an appointment at wherever you got your study done so they can program the pressures, etc. for you. Since you aren't buying the machine through them they will probably charge for the appointment, I think it cost me about $100 or so.

Well that's good - I just found out yesterday that I have obstructive sleep apnea. I am overweight and have GERD as well, so I am not doing myself any favors even before you look at my genetics (which could indicate that I'll have apnea even after I lose all the weight).
It's been almost three weeks since I was tested and since I was pretty sure it was going to be positive I've decided to get serious with losing some weight. I've been exercising a bit, but mostly just really watching what I eat. I'm already down 12 pounds! My doctor said that the CPAP might help with that as well, as he said something along the lines that your adrenal glands are overactive when they are constantly kicking out adrenaline as a response to your body's perceived lack of oxygen, and that causes people to hold on to weight longer. Something like that.
Anyway, any of you guys live in the states that have paid for this stuff relatively recently? It's the good old United States of America, which means I expect to spend somewhere between one million and one billion dollars out of pocket.

Ha ha yes, if you have a spouse it also benefits them greatly. Come to think of it I can't remember the last time I was kicked or shoved in the middle of the night.

Hang in there, man.
When I started, my doctor gave me sleeping pills to help me get used to the machine. He figured if I got addicted to the pills, we'd wean me off after. I can't remember how long I took the pills for, but maybe it was a couple of weeks. Last few days was a half pill to start weaning. You'll get there.

I agree that it’s worth it but it took me months to get used to wearing the mask so if it takes him longer than usual I hope he doesn’t get discouraged. I can’t sleep without it now.
