Had to remind myself who Mark Lee was. After watching that clip, Mark Lee is my vote. Perfect timing for his release too (hopefully).

He is one of the best Olympic broadcasters in Canadian history. If you listen to some of the most epic calls in track and field, swimming and speed skating, you hear Steve's voice.
This is such disappointing news.

Yeah I was always a fan of his - never thought he got the due credit he deserved.
IMHO he is not unlike Bob Cole where he has an excellent feel for the emotion of a moment and gets you caught up in it.

after all the Mike Richards comedy, hiring Steve Armitage would be pure poetry.

I have confirmation, Wills is definitely the new play by play guy for the Flames Radio. I can't tell you how i know but it is 100% confirmed guaranteed.

1. I'm not sure why everyone hates Mark Lee, or Hrudey for that matter. Quite frankly I think a Lee/Hrudey broadcast would bring a level of professionalism to our broadcast that's been lacking since Whalen left. We would be very lucky to have those two calling our games on a nightly basis.
2. What's with the Loubardias love? The guy knows his stuff, but man oh man is he a terrible play by play announcer. I seem to remember him getting a lot of hate around here when he was calling our games for reasons not dissimilar to Kerr. Keep him as a colour guy on radio where he excels.

The problem with Mark Lee is he's got two emotion levels. 2 and 10. He'll lull you to sleep with his PBP and then when something exciting happens it's full blast. There's no build up as play develops or pressure is maintained.

Armitage is 70. I doubt he's moving to Calgary to travel around with an NHL team all year.
Mark Lee perhaps, although he's done a bunch of sports so I'm not sure Sportsnet would stick him out in Calgary.

Sign Lee at TSN to do CFL games so I don't have to listen to Rod Black anymore.

I wonder if Hrudey might prefer the CBC schedule for family reasons (1-2 games a week). I think the national colour positions are still available. He strikes me as good enough that he would have a choice.
What about someone like Drew Remenda for the Calgary colour job?

I got to say, and I am usually pretty relaxed, I have no idea how he got a broadcast job in the first place.
turible........IMO.

I think folks are way to paranoid about announcers supposed biases.
Hrudey would be excllent.
|
Well I'd rather him be a Flames fan than an Oilers fan if he's doing a Flames broadcast.

The best Flames color guys were Doug Barkley and Mike Rogers, two guys who were never afraid to tell the truth if the team wasn't playing well, because often times they deserved it. I really hope that tradition continues.
The last thing I want is a homer or a fan.

This forum was, I'd say for the most part, very upset when Loubardias was let go. His passion for the game wears off on you. He personally reminded me a bit of Ed Whalen. I loved his PBP.

As long as Lee doesn't call the Oilers and Flames "Young Turks" I would be fine with him on PBP.
Hrudey would be fantastic. Always liked the guy and even though he has held Flames season tickets and lives in Calgary, he has shown he can be fair and objective when needed (ie. Calling out Bourque.)

The TSN article states that both were given the opportunity to bump younger guys out of their positions, and both elected not to do so.
Not every person would do that. Good for them.

I would love Mark Lee for the TV broadcast. Either way I think it's a good hire.
I'm also good with Hrudey for colour.

When Hrudey broke out, I couldn't stand him. I really thought he was just terrible. However, he has vastly improved over the years, and I look at him as one of the better color guys out there.
Loubo was horrible at the beginning - but only because of his voice. Once I got used to it, I found listening to games he called fairly entertaining and insightful. He was also one of those 'slight' homers - not the over-the-top team can do no wrong types who seem disappointed when the other team scores.
Lee would be fine with me. I think there are a lot of good voices out there with insight into the game.
Whomever they hire, I hope they are decent and stay for many years. Getting tired of the movement.

Could Care Less

This is perhaps a stupid question, but why can't CBC be profitable like I'm assuming TSN/Sportsnet is for Bell/Rogers? The government wouldn't have to fund it, and thus the budget cuts and layoffs of great sports people the article was talking about. Is it just because they insist on continuing to produce shows/broadcasts that are uneconomic? Whereas private cable networks will axe them and focus on ones that are profitable? Don't know much about this business but why can't CBC be run like just that, a business?
