Lets not forget here that the Lighting thought so highly of Percell that they were going to buy him out. Think about that before you think we are cutting anyone short.

so thought i would put this here from: Edmonton Oilers - An Outsider's Perspective by James Tanner
"Think about it: Gagner and Perron as your fifth and sixth best forwards? That is insane."
"Perron - Gagner - Yakupov This could be the best second line in hockey."

Yak will be worth the plane ticket to Russia. Coach, not 1st Class.

They got a player who is very bad on the defensive side of the game and he won't hit. Plus he dropped to the 4th line in Tampa. Good trade my ass!

SteveY is getting an asset for a failing prospect and someone they were going to buy out, and save 5+mil in the process. Oilers got a bad, soft player for someone their fans were constantly saying was worth at least a 2nd rounder or Kadri+.

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
FYI that Tampa Bay is retaining 1/3 of Gagner's salary in trade to Arizona
1/3 salary would have been the cost of buying out Gagner's contract

I don't care for the kid and all because he's a hot dog but really this deal does knock him down the depth chart to likely 3rd line duty which likely isn't going to work out well for either party as he will sulk and likely not produce playing with their 3rd line talent. You are right in that it's probably not going to end well.

A plane ticket back to Russia is about all he'll get.

Ribeiro was actually released because of an attitude problem. I think this 3-way trade make sense. Oilers picked up they want. I know Tampa would have buy him out and he would have been free to sign anywhere. MacT doesn't trust that Purcell would sign with them by choice, so he asked Yzerman to trade him to the Oilers for a player with pretty much the same amount of salary. Yzerman got rid of two unnecessary contract without using their compliace buyout and received a draft pick for it. Phoenix needed to replace a center they released and picked up Gagner + an extra player and only gave up a low draft pick.
So i don't see anything wrong with the trades. It was actually a good one overall because all 3 teams fulfilled their needs.

So no extra cap space, given the 1/3 retained.
Just the pick. Even less value then
EDIT:
PeteMoss beat me and more accurate - negative value

In the interest of accuracy.
I don't understand how this could happen. The media must be wrong on this trade. Oilers fans for a couple of years have been mock trading Gagner as a key piece of a package that would land Weber... or another top 2 defenseman (maybe top 4 if Gagner is traded straight up).
