Still can't get around how people don't love the under 23 team idea.
NHL goes out on a limb to introduce a unique new idea and everyone always craps on it.
It's a fun summer tournament that gives us another opportunity to watch the best players in the league play at a high level, what's so bad?

It's not supposed to be a "fun summer tournament".
It's supposed to be the pinnacle of hockey. The best on best competition to replace Olympic hockey.
I was hoping it'd be similar to the World Cup for soccer. Instead we're getting some sort of stupid All Star game.
Seriously, the fact that Canada or Sweden or the US might be missing their best player cause they're playing on one of the gimmick teams completely takes away all credibility from this tournament.

So its the World Hockey Championships with a couple gimmicky All-Star teams. We basically already have that and thats not the stated spirit of the tournament.

If the u23 doesn't automatically get guys like that, there's no point to sending a team like that. They'll get stomped.
Euro all stars? Wtf. Is that all the countries not good enough to have their own teams + other team rejects? Ya they'll be a real contender.
This format is gimmicky and contrived, they should have went with a classic setup. I won't be tuning in.
|
yes u-23 team gets priority.

I don't love it because it's a stupid idea. I want to see the best players in the world representing their country. Not a stupid gimmick all star team.

Plus its a matter of motivation and incentive.
You want to see players that want to win a prestigious trophy, the World Cup, for their country, you want to see that they want to win rather than just participate some contractually obligated tournament that they'd prefer not to lose.
And the Euro All-Star team and the 'Young Gun' team dont really have that motivation.

It's this way for just this one time because they don't have enough teams ready to qualify for it.
Again, it's only for one World Cup. Why not just embrace the novelty?

I guess people who are dead set against it don't have to watch. But I bet they will.

I wouldnt consider myself dead-set against it, I guess I'm just disappointed. I really like the idea of a World Cup of hockey that isnt bound by the idiocy of the IIHF and I had hope for this tournament.

I think thats the crux of the matter, the idea was to make this a serious, World-Class, top-level, best-on-best tournament and now its being relegated to a novelty right off the bat.

I actually agree with a lot of what you say, and simply put, to solve this not enough team issue they likely couldn't please everyone
I think though, one of the biggest reason many might not like it (and why I don't) is because many of us want to watch this tournament from a national pride perspective. Which country has the best players, or who's country will step up and win it for their nation. The Under 23 team doesn't invoke that feeling of National pride, it complicates the who to cheer for decision (no longer just I cheer for my country), and at the end of the day regardless of who wins there will always be the debate on whether the outcome would have been the same, which country would have won if they had their key U23 players on the roster.
And given key players in the NHL seem to be getting increasingly younger as to when they make impacts, that U23 team is going to leave a lot of questions marks in regards to the National pride aspect, which IMO is the biggest draw of this tournament.

What national anthem will they play after the Euro All Stars team wins a game?

Depending on the goaltending they'll probably be considered one of the best teams in the tournament.

but will they be playing at a high level? Canada Vs. Russia is one thing but
U-23 Vs. whoever...like I said young Canadian kids are gonna give everything they have to knock Canada out of the world cup?
If this thing is going to replace the Olympics as the big best on best tourney the gimmick teams gotta go

Some sort of horribly garbled mish-mash of all of them.
But in reality probably none, thats an IIHF thing.

What do you mean it's a money grab? Of course it's a money grab. Whether there is a U23 team, standard nations format, or whatever they choose, it will be a money grab. Don't understand that comment, the only reason this tournament exists or has existed in the past (at least since the 80's) is to earn money. Why would they do it otherwise?
