I'll certainly miss listening to Peter call games, but I wish him the best in his retirement! Whoever replaces him has mighty big shoes to fill.

And that comes from the guy who came out and said that Tom Higgins was being replaced by John Hufnagal the night be for the Stamps had a playoff game vs. Edmonton...

Apparently the news was supposed to wait until after the Stamps were eliminated, and then he justified it by saying it was his duty to report the news or some garbage. What a hypocrite.

I absolutely despise that piece of crap Eric Francis.
Kind of glad as I can make time to listen to the announcement whereas if it was just a surprise thing I may have missed it.

I wonder about Francis sometimes. Does he have a lot of friends in the business? I can't imagine many. Even if he has a point why tweet this comment and try to make Boomer look bad in front of fans and his employers? Does he think that Rogers already doesn't know this? He's always tweeting stuff like this about people in the business and many he's worked with and thrown around the word "classless" more than anyone I can remember in the media and I wouldn't necessarily call this tweet classy.

I'm gutted to see him go. I have been listening to his play by play my entire life. From being a little kid hearing him on the clock radio. He is so deeply connected to the Flames that I can't imagine Flames hockey without him.

I have always loved how Peter starts each call directly after the anthems. "Tonight! Live from Calgary!" He always sounded so happy and enthusiastic and it made me excited for every game.

He deserves every honour. Forever a Flame certainly, and a statue outside of the new building. He is the greatest.

I can't imagine listening to a Flames game not call by him. He has definitely been one of the best PBP broadcasters out there.

I've dreaded this day for a long time. The end of a great era.

Impossible to replace a guy like that.

For those that remember my game threads, and the flaming names called for goals....

Each and every one was based on Peter's radio calls. It was an awesome time to be a Flames fan.

Thank you, Peter, for your second-to-none contributions in all aspects of the game.

surprised Boomer didn't ask Stephen Brunt if he ever met or interviewed Pete. That would have been an amazing comversation to listen to.

Nothing but respect for Peter. everybody is always clamoring for that generational individual for the franchise. The flames had one, he was just in the broadcast booth.

Boring Sean Monahan@boringmonahan15m
Peter Maher used to be the announcer for the flames but he's not now. I like him, he told me he liked my tie once and I said thanks Peter.

Sad day for sure.

Easily one of the best PBP voices in any sport ever.

Not just his voice - the style was incredible and so natural.

Loved his commentary as well - Will miss Maher in the morning and Flames a 5.

I've been listening to Pete since he started doing Flames games - In the early days fewer games were on TV and all you had was radio - Peter's PBP was so good you didn't mind.

Still no better picking on some a-channel guy that may or may not have got the memo. It's a needless tweet from a guy that lacks class himself.

I'll miss Maher a lot. He was a staple in my life when I couldn't get the Flames' broadcasts.

Happy retirement, Mr. Maher.

Can't say anything more than what people already have. One of the best in the biz and will be missed.

It must not have been a very good memo to not leak anything. I had a text from a friend who works at the Fan tell me the news before I saw the tweet I posted. I wanted to wait until it had been said elsewhere before I put it on here.

I'm surprised by the lack of speculation over whether he retired willingly or if he was pushed into it. Unless he has a health issue, it seems too sudden and, as others have noted, the lack of a farewell season is a bit puzzling.

Hope Francis doesn't read this as his next tweet will be how the Fan is a joke for not enforcing the memo that may or may not have been sent to everyone.
