I predict Phaneuf is playing in Alberta within a year
I don't think there's any way Burke trades for that deal. Phaneuf is a fine player, but his mounting leg injuries are going to put him either out of the league or on the bottom pairing in the next four years.

I think he meant the team up north that makes 'bold' moves.

I think Edmonton is far more likely, but I actually meant both - I think there is also a very real chance that he becomes a Flame again.
I doubt Nonis wants to trade him, but my guess is that he gets pressure from above. And in order to move him, I would think that TO would need to retain some salary. Again, that would require approval from above.
With salary retained - say $1.5m per year, I could totally see Burke jumping on that. Phaneuf, as a 2nd pairing guy behind Gio and Brodie, and with a good partner, could make sense. (i.e. replacing Wideman)
If the Oilers acquired him, they would probably have him top pair with <insert 'Oiler top pairing player of the week before fans run him out of town as a bum' here>

If he is on the trading block and we don't offer up that much for him, I wouldn't mind him back here, as long as they retain some salary as well (25-50%).

No way. I don't want him for one simple fact, chemistry. He is a very obvious alpha who needs to be the man on whatever team he plays. Also throw in he has just come from the biggest hockey market, and he probably views Calgary as a backwater, not good enough to drive his Bentley and wear his try-hard bow ties in.
The guy is not a fit. He was a big catalyst as to the melt down this team had. Sure there were plenty others, but he really was the flash point.
Bottom line, if the Dion comes back, and even if it is willingly, you can throw out the progress we made this year.
Give him to the Oil, he would fit in nice with that bunch of self entitled kids.

Oh I think Hartley would change that self-entitled attitude. He'd whip that boy into shape. Of course I don't want him right now, but maybe when a few years are off the contract.
I don't think we need him that much with our defensive core pretty decent that what we are given credit for.
Brent Sutter was supposed to whip Phaneuf back into shape. He's had at least five coaches in his NHL career, none of whom have changed the self-entitled attitude. Dion brings far too much baggage for what he provides. Do not want.
Carlyle may not be around in Toronto at the start of next season. I wonder if either the Oilers or the Canucks would be willing to take a chance on him. He should be a better coach than either Eakins or Tortellini.

And they locked him up again for huge money. That team has committed alot of cap to a very mediocre core.
