And on top of it, they'll pay a portion of Luongos salary for 8 years.

You get rid of that terrible contract.

For Schneider and Lu the Canucks get a total of 14 NHL goals and a goalie with 10 career wins coming back #future #robbed?

I don't think anyone was seriously saying our goaltending was better, most were green text kind of comments.
But to say Lack is a top 20 goalie at this point? Probably not.

Pretty bad deal for Vancouver.
#1 - the return is less than the rumour return last year (bad management)
#2 - they got back a forward whose depth at best and a goalie whose looking like he isn't developing.

Interesting. Was Luongo benched because they were trading him, or trading him because he was benched (and possibly demanded a trade...again?)

Canucks still face a recapture penalty if he retires before his contract runs out

As inexperienced as Lack is, I'm comfortable with him as starter. Are there more proven goalies out there to be had? Certainly but why trade for them given the direction the Canucks are now headed and with the D they still have?

Guys named Mike who trade Roberto Luongo to the Panthers always seem smart in hindsight, right?

I don't believe that, it makes far more sense that it was the other way around. The only explanation for benching him was that he was on the block, but no one gave it any credence because... well, duh. This has probably been in the works for a little while.

Irrelevant comparison, what matters is what the Flames got versus what the Flames could have got if they swallowed their medicine.
In many ways Vancouver is having this rebuild forced onto them in ways that didn't become as acute for the Flames. I can't help but feel that if we had a disappointing season like the Canucks and our star got injured that we would have instead hunkered down and hoped for next season instead of just throwing the towel in on the core that was clearly not going to do anything further.

Speaking just from an Avs fan perspective, I'd much rather have the younger, more experienced goalie who has already gone through his growing pains in Varlamov.

That's pretty much what we were saying a couple years ago while desperately trying to salvage hope.

I might even take Scrivens/Fasth over Lack/Markstrom.
Don't forget about Khudobin, who's been pretty good for Carolina and was good in relief for Boston last season.

AND they keep salary of that contract, so they didn't shed themselves of all of it. Total failure if they keep 25% or more of it.
