Has anyone heard specifics on what the GMs are looking at?

Most teams at least pretend that drafting first overall is a disgrace.
That being said, if you know someplace where I can sit around, not go to work but get to watch hockey games and collect my fat paycheque, please, tell me where I sign up.

But they didnt risk their jobs. Sacco did, but while he lost his job he also still got paid and is still getting paid.

I dont know how unwitting he was, but you're spot on. They took the circus season, tanked, got the player they wanted and are now moving forward.

Banning the Oilers from drafting in the top 10. That's it.

The NBA's wheel proposal is designed to benefit the large market teams that never suck bad enough to get the top overall pick. It is simply a very bad way of doing things if your goal is for the draft to help the league's weaker sisters.

I don't know if it's been mentioned but I don't think rejigging the draft has much to do with the Oilers, Panthers, etc, being repeat top draft pickers but to do with other GMs fondling their hands in anticipation of lucking out and getting to draft Connor McDavid.

Would it surprise anyone if the Oilers repeated this scerino again next year setting their sights on either Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel?
One 2015 Mock draft already has Edmonton picking Jack Eichel at 3rd with the Flames picking at the 8th spot. http://www.draftsite.com/nhl/mock-draft/2015/. Chances are if the Oilers are sucking part way through next season they are probably going to throw in the towel once again.

I wouldn't put too much stock in that mock draft, as long as Burke is here there is no way we are drafting a 5' 11" 180lb defenceman with the #6 pick.

This is right on! Its all about working the advantages for your team. Right now for the where the Flames are they should leave it as is, perhaps skew it a bit towards the 3-5 position but that is it....

And good for them, who can blame them.
Imagine being one of the half dozen bad teams that can't or won't take their fans for granted for a year or 3, and actually tries to be competitive.
It must be super frustrating for a team like Nashville that eats a big contract for weber, tries to put a decent product out, and gets screwed by Calgary and Edmonton and Colorado who say fata it, drag down everybody's revenues, and get a better pick to boot.

I wouldn't feel too sorry for Nashville. They went into a bit of a swoon late last season and ended up with Seth Jones - probably a better prospect than any the Panthers have drafted in a decade of suckage.

As long as they change it so that Edmonton is never allowed to pick first overall ever again.
