I posted some of this in the daily thread but I think it belongs here too (and everywhere else I post). We didn't win a medal in Women's slopestyle, but the event nonetheless belonged to Sarah Burke. RIP Sarah, we miss you.

Marie Martinod quit professional skiing seven years ago. She had a daughter and got a job at a nightclub back home in France. About three years ago, Burke came to visit to ask her to un-retire and re-join the competition circuit so that she could be in the olympics. Today, she won a silver medal.

I said, 'You're kidding me, that's nonsense, I'll never be able to do it.' But then I thought I can't watch it on the couch on television.

I think I didn't say goodbye to Sarah yet, and I still have to do it. Now I feel like I'm able to do it, because I did what she asked me to do when I last saw her two years ago.

My co-worker, who used to be a compete in snowboard slopestyle knew Sarah Burke pretty well, after her passing, they made a lot of "Celebrate Sarah" stickers. My co-worker was going to give them to her sister for this olympic to put them on her sled, but she said that they would not allow it.

I understand that there is no real advertisement for the Olympics, but why can't an athlete have something showing in memory of other athletes?

Who's your co-worker? Might be I know her. Yeah there was a lot of "I Ski for Sarah" stickers going around at the time, I have a couple left over somewhere.

The reason they didn't allow it is that they basically lump it in with other political statements. It's not that they object to remembering people but they don't want to have to go to the trouble of vetting every sticker or symbol people want to wear to make sure it's not a political statement. Team Canada knew beforehand that those wouldn't be allowed. Still sucks, but really, there was no lack of recognition given to Sarah in these games. Her name was mentioned over the loudspeaker by the guys calling the action more than any other athlete, she's talked about in every interview, and for good reason: all the girls know that this is because of her. Not just the olympics, but women's skiing. When Sarah started there was no Women's Halfpipe. She made it happen.

I kinda took for granted how awesome our Olympic coverage is compared to other countries

That chart above sums up the reason why the NHL has no interest in being in the Olympics unless they are prime time NA games. Not much coverage going on in the US.

Yet the USA-Russia game was the most watched hockey game ever on NBCSN

Being the most ever watched hockey game on NBCSN doesn't really mean much. First it's not the main network, second it's comparing hockey to hockey. The NHL isn't trying to leverage the Olympics to beat there already less than stellar tv ratings in the US

And since hockey was already shown live and spoiled, there wasn't a minute of it on the primetime show last night.

It was an hour of Mikaela Shiffin and then a bunch of short track speed skating
