As for Russel, tough valuation to come up with. He has played well this year but I think league wide he's more of a 5-7 defenceman depending on the team. Still a UFA defenceman his age who can play that role still can get 3 million a year.
His impact thus far has been vastly greater than a 5-7 guy, but if Russell and Smid are our bottom pairing, I don't think that's horrible.

I think that's pretty good actually.

Upgrade Wideman with someone bigger, and better defensively. Get another big , solid top 4 (preferably top 2). And then you've got:

Giordano - upgrade
Brodie - upgrade
Russell - Smid

I would be very happy with that while we continue to develop the youth.

Not sure why people think hell get top end money; 6 million plus. I put him in a similar bracket at signings like matt carle, garrison, msrtin, michalek, etc who got around the 5 million mark. I tend to find offensive d are the ones that get over paid instead. The guys who constantly put up 40+ points a year.

I think it is going to be a great year to be a free agent.

All the teams had to squeeze in under the artificially low cap this year. And now it is going to jump by about $7m. That's $210m in new room.

The cheque books will be out this summer.

More money injected into the system + weak UFA class.

The biggest names on defense include:

Niskanen, Markov, Boyle, MacDonald, Gilbert, Timonen, Meszaros, Giradi, and Nikitin.

Pretty underwhelming.

I think Matt green is a UFA as well... Es an undervalued defencemen on a deep team in LA. I think it would be good for the flames to target Girardi and green in free agency... Even if it meant overpaying a little bit for them since the flames have the cap room. Having Brodie, giordano, wideman, Russell, Girardi, green, and SOB would be a pretty good defence for next year.

I think Russell is the type of defensemen teams like having around making #5 Dman money, sort of like when we re-signed Andrew Ference. Russell isn't a guy you ideally want in your top 4 and certainly not paid like a top 4 but he is valuable in his ability to fill a top 4 role.

This will be such a win for Flames fans if Burke can extend Russell for 4 years at reasonable money. The guy is going to just get better.

I think so too, also because of the relative age of this years crop, we will see some big paycheques moved around the draft.

Talks a little about last nights game and answers questions about a possible extension and why he'd love to stay here

That seems like a great ufa market unless I'm missing sarcasm?

When you take off some of the names who will no doubt resign, it doesn't look so good anymore. Definitely not the same kind of quality compared to forwards this year.

I would assume fewer than half of them hit the market

Only if your a top end free agent. I cant see teams overpaying for the middle/bottom type guys when so many younger core guys are coming up in the next couple of years.

Are there 24 sheltered minutes in a game? News to me

I agree totally! He can't play 24 mins a game, and be sheltered the whole time.

None of our young players should be heeding the advice of Matt Stajan.

Every player in that locker room would disagree with you...which isnt surprising.
