After thinking about it I like the intent of this move, putting more depth and fight into the roster at the cost of a valueless goalie but, because the goalie was valueless they really only traded for an overpaid replacement level player.
But the difficulty Edmonton has signing free agents should not be understated when evaluating this deal. They basically have to trade even for depth guys with term contracts to ensure they'll stick with the club.
They try to overpay to attract a 4th liner. He takes less money to go elsewhere.
So they end up trading their #1 goalie (at the beginning of the season, anyway) for him - and retain half his salary to boot!
Then they give up a 3rd in an attempt to replace the goalie (with a downgrade)
This guy is a perfect fit for the Oilers in the IQ department. After turning down the Oilers because he didn't want to go to that city or organization ("not a good fit" is the PC version that every player/agent uses when turning them down), you'd figure he'd ask Nashville for a NTC, if even to one team.
Instead, as soon as he disappoints in Nashville, the Preds know exactly who they'd have with a trading partner.
Further, MacTavish is still building the team he wanted to build in the SUMMER, even after the joke of the past 3+ months of the season shows that his ideas in the summer were dubious at best.

I'm trying to figure out what is so special about Matt Hendricks that makes him worth close to 2 million. He has averaged 12 minutes a game once in his NHL career, otherwise he plays right around 12-14th forward minute. He plays on the PK so I guess that is a plus.
Honestly, is the guy any better than someone like Tom Kostopoulos, who you can have for free and at league minimum?

He's better than Kostopoulos, but relative to more important depth positions, only marginally.
He can take a regular shift and fight some middleweights and win, but he's not going to be a defensive anchor for the roster.
