if we lived in the oiler's bizarro universe, we'd just wait for keenan to go do his MBA and give him the reigns as GM.

Looking at Mike Futa's past history drafting for the LA Kings...I vote for him!!!

Benning, Fenton and Futa all look like good candidates. I guess Benning and Fenton have learned a thing or two from Chiarelli and Poile, and Futas drafting record is looking good. If it's anyone from those three, I'll be happy. Looking at their resumes, I'd give Benning a very slight edge over the other two.

I think Benning, Fenton, and Futa are all pretty much the top 3 for everyone.

Which means, after years of watching the Flames do business, that it is almost certain they will hire someone else.

It seems the Kings may not allow teams to talk to Futa until after the upcoming draft.

It has been widely reported that the Sabres have asked to speak to Futa, but no one can confirm that the Kings have allowed it.

Thats a bitch move, stopping a potential big promotion. Futa can't be too happy with that.

I hear that Burke knows Benning, the familiarity may help Benning.

I kind of get it, if hired mid season they can't really work with the team until after the draft anyways. At least from an scouting perspective. Apparently they all have windows in their contracts when they can interview.

I don't. It's not like he's taking a lateral position. It's a big promotion and if the Kings are scared of his scouting knowledge going to the Flames? well thats just dumb, the Flames have their own scouting that has been going on so its not like he's going to come in throw that all out the window.

Name just mentioned above, Kekäläinen took over in mid-season last year.

I would get it if the season had ended and all team had already finished their scouting and we were weeks from the draft. You don't want that knowledge sneaking out. Just like when Button was hired, he wasn't allowed to participate in our draft.

The fact is Burke wants someone with scouting knowledge and here is a guy who has that in abundance but is not going to get a shot because the Kings are not allowing it.

I don't care if its with Sabres or Flames but they shouldn't be blocking it.

Must be the guy they were in a rush to talk to.

It won't be Poulin. That would reek of feaster/hartley, no?

I am not going to pretend I know enough about any of these guys to say yes or no to any of them.

But I do know that I want to see an emphasis on drafting and development. Burke is going to set the blueprint (and I am good with that), and Burke is going to ensure that we aren't fleeced on the trading floor, so that leaves drafting and development as the key aspects of the job and the candidate.

That being the case, I would not want it to be Poulin as I don't see a solid track record there (and I agree with the 'no Leafs west' comments).

Benning sounds good.

And Futa sounds like an awesome choice.

Didn't the same thing happen when we hired Button as GM? If I recall, he was with Dallas at the time, and stayed with Dallas, even after being hired, until after the draft.

That's fine, Flames can wait, we are in capable hands with Burke. I can't think of a better person to handle the upcoming trade deadline than Burke.

Button seems to have done well in recent drafts that I wouldn't have a problem handing the reins over to him. Actually, the most success the Flames have had in recent years at the draft was when Button was supposedly given complete autonomy.

I hope Burke waits for the best guy. Flames don't need to hire someone right away.

I hope Jason Botterill gets consideration, but given Burkie's comments about the Penguins, likely wouldn't happen. Botterill is a fantastic young hockey mind with a brilliant future.

Hope they don't hire with their main selling point being that previous team drafted well - the job has so much more to it than evaluating junior hockey players.

You hire someone who is good at that role as your head of scouting or player personnel.

The GM needs to be a planner, negiotiator, horse trader, spokesperson/communicator and have player evaluation skills.

Yes, but read Burke's comments. Much of those things will be his domain and he is looking for a GM to do the things he doesn't want to do. He also said that drafting and developing were key aspects for the GM candidate.

Planning especially, and blueprinting the team, will be primarily Burke
