If the Islanders can't afford him now for 7/8 of the season @6.4M and it was worth even a second round pick to save 1.3M that means they don't have any plans to sign Vanek for next year.

If is costs 1.3 M for a 2nd round pick the Flames should take the 10 million they are spending less than last year and buy 7 or 8 2nd round picks.

Buffalo has already won in everyway on this trade and I would not be surprised if they flip Moulson for even more picks at the trade deadline.
If Moulson has another good season especially in the goal department he will be desired by GM's.
If this was just player for player it would gave been a fairly even trade.
Shedding Vanek's big contract has already got the Sabres a 1st round pick and 2nd the following draft.
Moulson will probably get them another 1st or 2nd round pick this deadline to even sweeten the deal more.

It's a little hard to say that at this point. Vanek could put up great numbers with Tavares and re-sign with NY, while Buffalo could draft players that never see an NHL game. You really can't say who won in a trade involving draft picks this soon after the trade.

Vanek is the type of player the Isles were hoping Nino Niederreiter would become...

At the same age as Niederreitter is today Vanek was a NHL rookie .

Vanek's rookie year as 21 year old was 25 goals and 48 pts on a Sabres team that he was 6th in scoring .... but actually 7th as Roy had 46 pts in only 70 (11 less than Vanek) games.

Vanek spent a whole year in the AHL without a call up 2 years after being drafted 5th overall.

Right now Niederreitter has 2 goals in 5 games and is 8th in Wild scoring.... That is a 13 goal 32 pts pace .... not inconceivable that he might turn into a Vanek type player yet.

No clue why you are bringing up stats. I am simply referring to the vision that Nino is a big body skilled forward (or was drafted as one) but the Isles werent patient enough for the development.

It might mean that, but I'm not convinced that we should so cavalierly dismiss the thought that the Islanders could find themselves in a position to pursue keeping Vanek.

I rather see this as precautionary, in the event that Vanek doesn't pan out for them as hoped, or in the case that they do fail to re-sign him. It makes good business sense for a cash-poor but prospect-rich team to make such a deal. Thy need a successful Vanek at this stage much more than the additional pick.

It's presently 2 goals and 5 points in 13 games.

Not quite; he was drafted in 03 and spent the 03-04 season in the WCHA.

He spent the 04-05 season in the AHL. That's one year after he was drafted.

And you can't claim he was 7th in scoring just because Roy had 2 less points in 11 less games.

@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Another wrinkle in the Vanek deal: if the 1st round pick NYI sent Buff ends up top 10 in June, Isles have option to defer the pick to 2015
