4th line needs energy and grit more than size.
Colborne isn't really the player to provide those things.

PLAYING CATCH-UP
The Flames acquired centre Joe Colborne from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night with the hope the 23-year-old will play a big role on the team. His new journey, however, will not start on Thursday night.
Colborne will not suit up against the Washington Capitals tomorrow evening.
"I told him that we need to cover three and a half weeks of training camp in six, seven days," Hartley explained. "Obviously we want to get there. We went through our playbook. We do lots of video with him.
"I think watching the first game is going to be very important [for him.]"

Ramo is starting goaltender:

RAMO READY FOR THE NEXT STEP
On Monday, the Flames released their 23-man opening day roster and designated Karri Ramo as the starting netminder. He has spent the last four seasons in the KHL with Omsk Avangard, solidifying himself as one of the top goaltenders in Russia, but he doesn't see tomorrow's game against the Capitals as a massive change from what he's been doing the past few seasons.
It's just another step forward.
"It's a new start but my hockey career is just continuing," he said. "I'm not doing anything special. I don't have to do anything differently. It's the same game we play."

Baertschi:

The Flames are in a full blown rebuild, get a young inovative coach to build a system while the team is being built.
|
The Flames have started their rebuild, yes. The truth of the matter is, Flames don't have very many NHL ready prospects yet. We aren't in the same situation as some other rebuilding teams that have a decent numbers of guys who the clear path is play in the NHL and get the experience. We have a lot of midtear guys who likely could benefit from developing at at different level before they are thrown to the wolves.
This idea that you play any rookie you have at all cost because we are in a rebuild is not a good one IMO. You play the ones that are ready and can likely handle it, and I believe the Flames are doing this. It doesn't do the ready prospects like Sven and Monahan any good to be surrounded by a team full of non NHL caliber players simply because we are in a rebuild.
The Flames have a few more years of sucking (or creative trading, like they tried with Colborne) until they can pump the NHL roster full of young blood, I don't think it really has anything to do with not having the right coach.

I listened to Sven's media scrum and he said all the right things and seemed very genuine.
Looking forward to how he bounces back tomorrow. I think he's due for a breakout year.

Something else to pass the time before tomorrow.

Quote:
So far, through development camp, the rookie tournament, and training camp, Monahan seems to have gotten stronger on the ice and more comfortable off it. He compares it to his first experience in the junior ranks.
“My first step like that was going into my first OHL camp. I didn’t know what to expect there and I learned quickly,” Monahan says. “I guess I got better as the season went on. That’s something I’m trying to do here.”
|
Quote:
Raised by a hockey family – with an uncle who played pro in Italy, a grandfather who suited up with the Pittsburgh Hornets in the AHL, and cousin who turned pro in Germany – Monahan came by his passion for the game naturally.
“I just like to work hard. That’s something I’ve done as a player ever since I was a little kid. It’s just kind of in my family’s genes,” Monahan says. “My dad and my grandpa would always be tough on me even when I was six years old."
They wanted him to focus on puck possession, winning faceoffs so he didn’t have to chase pucks around. Not your typical coaching advice for a toddler, but something that helped him think the game the right way from a young age.
“Starting at six, it’s really carried with me, that competitive nature.”
|
Quote:
Monahan will look to make up for missing out on the 2013 world juniors experience this holiday season as well after being cut from last year’s camp following a 10-game suspension that saw him enter selection camp in less than ideal physical condition.
“I wasn’t in a game for a while and that was tough for me. I hopped into that high pace again,” Monahan reflects. “I learned a lot. That tournament’s quick and they’re looking for the most ready players. Unfortunately I wasn’t part of that, but I think I know what to expect coming into this next camp.”

Can't wait for tomorrow night... U know everyone says it's going to be a rough season for the flames but I'm excited to see the kids get their chances. Here's hoping Monahan and baertschi show chemistry right away and both have a good start to the season.

What a year to draft 6th overall. Monahan has all the makings of a franchise changer. I am loving his demeanor, work ethic, and humble nature. I am just so happy the Flames got this kid

Other draft picks may be more flashy, but players like what Monahan could become are what teams win Stanley Cups with.

Did people watch Monahan's shootout move from the video of Hartley's interview today?
Slick, slick hands.

Looked like him, and assumed it was him since they were talking about him during that part of the interview.

It was Colborne. That's his signature breakaway move.

The video of Sven talking about the comments had him tall about facing Ovechkin. He sure looks like a more attractive version of Ovechkin

“I think Burkie was probably just trying to get him going,” Flames defenceman Shane O’Brien said. “I don’t think he was trying to ruin the kid’s confidence. I think he was trying to tell him he needs to be better. That’s how Burkie is, he’ll speak is mind and know where you stand with him.
“I think Baertschi is a strong kid. I haven’t talked to him about it, but I’m sure he’s heard about it — it’s Calgary and a big deal.
“But one thing I’ll say about Burkie, he may say some negative things at times, but he protects his players, too.”

“It’s obviously a new chapter and there’s been some change, but we’re not looking at it, internally in the locker room, as a rebuild where we’re going to be satisfied losing,” Stempniak said. “Every year, there’s a team that comes out and plays above expectations and a lot of times they’re young teams. You look back at what Ottawa did a couple of years ago, where they were written off, but they got contributions from everyone and made the playoffs.
“That’s a team we can model ourselves after.”

At the very least, O'Brien gave Monahan kudos for surviving head coach Bob Hartley's month-long doozy of an introduction.
"He made it through the toughest camp I've ever been in as a pro," he said.
"I was joking with him, 'Did you think this is what the NHL is all about?' He laughed and smiled. For an 18-yearold kid, he probably got his eyes opened a little bit. But he made it through.
"Like I said, he's got a bright future and he's a good kid. Hopefully, he can mature quickly because we're going to need him."

O'Brien isn't very good as a player, and can be dirty, but seems like a good guy in the locker room from what I've seen so far.
