Poirier's coach, Benoit Groulx, will also be the Canadian assistant coach for the upcoming WJC.
Maybe we see him make the team.

I doubt this will have any bearing on Vinny's decision, unless Vinny is planning on joining him in jr.'s next year.

Are you just looking for a fight, or illiterate?
I dont mind the kid as a pick. I Think he will make the NhL. Never bashed him at all.
I am however calling i like i see it when the first sign of criticism is dog piled without thinking it might have merit.
So why are you so defensive about the guy?

I'm not defensive about the guy, Carlson. I know nothing about him other than what little I've read thus far, and as such have reserved judgment. But your crying is nothing but noise.
And I'm still waiting on you to show the other team's lists to prove your earlier claim.

I've been reading some reactions from fans in Quebec, and they really like the pick. Say that they don't know why more people didn't project him to go in the 1st round.

I could see him definitely playing on our PK in the future... has that Lombardi break away speed.

Well for what it is worth, and i have not seen the ISS report on him, but the oiler media read a report that said his offensive upside "is minimal". He does play a strong 200 foot Game and works very hard apparently. I think you have to pay to get that report an i dont care enough o do so.
I found it odd to say a guy who scored 30 goals could be descirbed as having "minimal" offensive upside. Dont get it.
Still, even if you consider the negative report, he still projects to be an NHL player as a role player. I dont mind that at all for a late first roundpick.

I'm showing my age here, but this kid makes me think of Paul Ranheim.

First thing I thought too, hope he has better hands

I can sort of see it. Take that goal I mentioned upthread, the one at 0:42 on the highlight reel. Poirier stopped moving his legs 40 feet out and the D still couldn't catch him in time — which tells you a lot about his speed. But the NHL is a faster game all round. He wouldn't have the luxury of coasting 40 feet in the bigs while he works on faking out the goalie.
I said earlier that the video of Poirier reminds me of Paul Ranheim, and it sounds like a couple of people agree. Ranheim had that one year where he scored 68 goals in the minors, but he couldn't translate that into scoring at the NHL level. Maybe Poirier makes that transition, maybe not.
However, if his downside is a 3rd-line winger who is a whizbang penalty killer, I don't believe I'll die of hurt feelings.

This guy's highlights are very exciting. I think he will be a steal. He has explosive speed, power, amazing hands, and his character is talked about positively. I have only heard horrible things about Shinkaruk and his attitude. He will be a perfect Canuck!!!

My only concern with today is the lack of balance. I would have liked to have seen at least 1 defenceman.

ISS had him ranked 79th. Are you more educated on this player thanthey are? How many games of his have you watched?
Nhlcs had him 39
Hockey news 47
I will admit i havent seen him play, and i suspect most here have not. I also suspect that the reason ISS has him ranked so low is that they have seen him play.
The criticism that the organization takes on this pick is because at least three of the "educated" had him ranked low.
So dont sit there with a couple of you tube clips and a handful of cheetos and call yourself an expert, with those who make their living evaluating the talent and analyzing the sport as "uneducated". Your argument fails on so many levels.
And by the way, i dont mind the kid - he reminds me of Steve Begin from the sounds of it. He will have a place in the league. Opefully he can agitate as well.

I haven't even seen a YouTube clip of the player, and I haven't called myself an expert, in fact my point is the exact opposite. I have no opinion on this pick, because I readily admit I'm not qualified to have one, just like 90% on this board. My only opinion is people that have extreme reactions to a 22nd overall pick (good or bad reactions) have nothing concrete enough to base it on.
Nice that those lists have him where they do. The point is, even for those so called experts, the margin for error, and the margin for differential development outside the top 10'picks at best is so high, it's almost impossible to think a pick is so good or so bad with any kind of certainty. So rather than call for Feasters head like a fool or give yourself a heart attack over the 22nd overall pick, how about you play the wait and see game and see how it works out and make some comments when you can actually have an educated opinion on it. There is no way, regardless of pick that the 22nd overall would be a slam dunk win or failure at this point, so lets see how it pans out.

Sounds like the kind of player Darryl Sutter thought he was picking back in the day. Good Western boy, too.
Well, he is. Isn't Gatineau in western Quebec?

The day isn't over.
You're drafting assets, they aren't building next years team with the first round.

Disagree. I think that Wotherspoon and Sieloff seem to be good prospects. This is a heavy forward draft. I'm not happy with the 22nd pick. That being said, I don't get paid to scout players and I'm sure they know something I don't.
