Yes, but they need to be right the vets. I can't say I'm particularly fond of the idea of having veterans, who would rather be playing elsewhere (Tanguay and Cammalleri) as the vets our younger players are looking up to.

Keep Stempniak and Sarich. Stemp is good as a 3rd liner and provides scoring. Why Sarich? I think his good compared to what the Flames have currently. His experience and leadership is what's needed for the young guys coming in. I think he's a lot better than what a lot of ppl here thinks about his value on this team.
Even though GlenX's contract is super good, if he can be traded for a good prospect or an unbelievable bundle, why not? The guy reminds me of Bourque - plays hard once in a while. When he's hot, he's great, but when he's cold, he sucks and blows; and it's so noticeable on the ice. Both players take the stupidest penalties and at the lousiest of times.

I have this sneaking suspicion that Sarich may retire.

You need the right veteran players. Guys with a bad attitude should be removed, and players that have a good work ethic should replace them. Less Alex Tanguay's, more Eric Nystrom's.

Yep. This is why I liked JOey Mac re-signing with the Flames and why I want Big Erne to return.

even at his age I liked the 'jump' and 'power' sarich offered when he played this season. Not sure if it was because he was rested for long periods or his own plain effort.
I assume he's a great team player too...

Yup, I wouldn't mind having sarich around this season with an 'A' on his sweater.
I would love tanguay used as part of a package to get stastny.

Or Lucic or Horton or Bickell or Penner or Cleary or even Handsuz and Cracknell . ..... Bourque was one of Montreal's more effective forwards in the Playoffs.
All these big guys seem to drift off in the regular season but if they basically carry their teams in the playoffs. When they are good they easily out perform the Hudler and Stempniaks
Glencross would likely be a key playoff performer.

I think it is safe to say, that shopping that group of players, along with Cammallari, means they are not in the Flames long term plans.
What I find interesting, is some of the players not on that list. Like Stajan. He gets no respect but he put together a pretty decent year considering his time on ice was as low as it was.
Overall, I think a number of decent players with some upside potential, were limited in ice time in order to appease vets who were under performing. Perhaps Kipper was the best example of this. And even though Bouwmeester had the best year he ever had in Calgary, Brodie brought more this year once Bouwmeesters ice time was available and he has shown some excellent upside.
More ice time for players like Hudler, Backlund, Stajan or Giordano will pick up some of the slack.
Then there are players like Brodie or Baertschi. There is a log jam at left wing. Does that mean we keep a veteran and limit Baertschi's ice time? You have to move some vets.
I don't see the players being made available as a stripping of the club's skill or experience. Bringing in a top draft pick, a good free agent/trade player or two, along with some potential growth from within the organization will give this team a long needed shot of adrenalin.
And trading players like Cammalleri, Tanguay, Stempniak or Sarich could bring in many more prospects which could deepen the talent pool considerably.
When you compare the Flames with Edmonton and how they have been mired in mediocrity for such a long time, one of the major things that kept them there, was holding onto players who lost interest years ago.

Stajan cannot be part of the long term plans.
Even if you ignore his manipulation of the charity golf tournament and looking awful n the media afterwards, he is the posterboy for turning good assets into bad contracts.

Granted, his years here under Brent were not good. However, a lot of that was Sutter's mismanagement of him. Last year he was pretty much our only true Center and he had a pro-rated 44 point season, all while earning 2.5 million (3.5 million cap-hit). Unless you're getting a sweetheart return or one of our younger Centers makes major strides, we need to keep him, for insurance if nothing else.

Only problem is the NTC. And it has been rumored Malone will only waive to go back to Pittsburgh.
