My girlfriend worked at Safeway a little ways back and the stories I heard about the union were just gross. I sure hope Sobeys gets rid of the union - there were so many people she worked with that wouldn't have a job if not for senority and the union.
There are 3 unionized Sobey's locations in Calgary, also Sobey's is pretty heavily unionized out East.
They have very little to worry about.
Which 3? Only Forrest Lawn as far as I know, which is also the only one in Alberta, possibly west of Manitoba to.
It is Sobeys' parent company (Empire)which bought Safeway, not Sobeys per say, more like the rich getting richer Things will likely carry on the way they for quite sometime (although I heard a rumor they ((Sobeys)) could only use the Safeway name untill the end of 2014). I believe the Franchised Sobeys stores are in the most trouble. Sobeys has been trying to get rid of the independent stores for the last few years now and could really due a number on them in terms of customer counts, sales and marketing by really pushing the Safeway's.

That's probably the case here in Okotoks - Sobeys is, I believe, a franchise with a Safeway just down the street. There is also the Walmart, Costco and Extra Foods (or No Frills now I think) in town. No idea how Sobeys is staying in business, although they do tend to have the best produce.

The Gilberts have been a part of the Okotoks business community for decades. They're good operators even though as D. Sutton says, Sobeys doesn't care much for the franchised stores nor did they care for the true "independents" hat were so prominent under the old IGA banner.
The rich definitely are going to get "richer" in this case.

Agreed very much, and it still sucks about the accident.
My wife grey up with them and we tend to shop at Sobeys for everything that we can't get / don't want to get at Costco to "support local".
I talked with one of the deli people at Safeway today and they said there is some sort of handover to Sobeys on Nov 4 I believe. I asked her about her sweet, sweet sandwiches and she didn't know if Sobeys was going to keep them or not. Basically, all of the normal workers have no idea what is going to happen.

That sounds about normal in these situations...

are these the sandwhiches made by sandwhich artisans working exclusively in the medium of sandwhiches?
these artisans should be revered and steps should be taken to ensure thier skills are not lost and transferred down to future generations - I'd hate to think of my kids have a future of dull tasteless sandwhiches......

The sandwiches at Sobeys are pretty tasty too, I just find they are not as filling as those at Safeway.
Just a heads up. They just announced there are 23 pending stores that Empire will need to divest themselves of (13 Safeway and 10 Sobeys).
None in Calgary are directly impacted. Cochrane Sobeys would be the closest location impacted by this. As far as I know this means these locations will be sold to competitors and not closed down.

Obvious choices would be Loblaws, or the Overwaitea/Save-On-Foods group. Or maybe Metro from the east, but I doubt this would be enough stores to have as a stand alone Western group
