Just a thought.

while i like the idea, i can't think of a feasible implementation plan at the moment.

Yeah neither can I, but it is done in other sports. I think it just needs some "out of the box" thinking.

How is it done in other sports? I've never heard of any in between levels of contact in sports like football.

Lacrosse goes up in stages by age: - Contact - Equal Pressure (Mini Tyke)
- Contact - place and Push (Tyke)
- Contact: Full Contact (Novice)
Rugby, increases with ages. U-11 can tackle, but they can not impede the tackle ie: no fed off, also no rucks/mauls. As the ages increase more contact is brought into the game, rucks/mauls/contested scrums & line outs/the ability to fed a tackler.
Those are two sports. I don't play football, nor have I had kids play football so I can't speak to that sport.

I think hockey is much like lacrosse already. There's a degree of contact allowed at younger levels with the eventual introduction of full contact. I'm not sure where you'd find a middle ground between the two.

Yeah I don't know either, it was really just a blue sky thought.

Had an idea!

I think awareness on the ice would go a long way with helping reduce the issues that arise when players enter leagues where hitting is legal and they have never had to deal with it before.
I know for me, after getting run over a few times, I learned to become more aware of what was happening around me on the ice and I haven't been hit hard since.

Season has started
I watched three AA pee wee games this weekend. Obviously what will hurt theses kids is when they go into bantam but first observations are. 1) It made no difference in the intensity of the kids. 2) the reffing was very good allowing for incidental contact and letting kids battle. 3) the Moms are not yelling nearly as much. 4) toe drag central, the skilled kids can really dominate, with no fear of getting hit.
Really didn't miss the hitting but kids are going to be skating with there heads down which will make the transition to bantam that much more difficult.

This is anecdotal, but I'm told by Springbank Assoc, they will have enough boys for three more teams than they expected. They believe that no-hitting has encouraged a larger number of kids to continue.
