200k is all he gets for a signing bonus?
I knew a guy that was a late round pick and never played in the NHL that got more than that. Still plenty of money to pay for school expenses if that is what he wants to do.

It's no secret that other teams want him. With Gaudreau living in Boston, more than likely having close friends living in Boston, maybe a girlfriend in Boston, and the Bruins having interest in him, not hard to see he might want to stay in Boston after his degree.

What? He won't be a UFA if he stays and finishes his degree, no?

Baertschi gets $92,500 signing bonus for 3 years. Total of $277,500 plus he's eligible for other bonuses. That should take care of college fees.
Okay he's a first round pick but Reinhart gets a signing bonus of $90,000 per year.

$92,500/year is the maximum signing bonus he could receive. $70,000 would be his AHL salary.
If he turned out to be another Mitch Wahl and busted out during his ELC while never playing a game in the NHL, he'd walk away as a 24 year-old with $487,500 earned as a professional hockey player.

I broke this down earlier but on a 3 year ELC a top tier talent can expect to make ~$480k.
Top prospects usually get 90k per year signing bonuses ($270k total) and an AHL salary of 70k per year (210k total)
That should be more then enough to set you up to pay for your school after your ELC is over.

Character assassination of Rhett, much like his own character assassination of Gaudreau. Rhett essentially calls him a coward. I wish I had a radio show to call out Rhett, call him a prick, let everyone know how much of an arrogant ###### he is. And ive met many flames, know a couple alumni personally outside of hockey, and the vast majority are great guys, and I can tell you they also dont think Rhett's little schtick is very funny. Classy guys like Cammilleri, Regehr, Nystrom, Berezan too. Calling out Iginla is one thing, calling out Gaudreau who Rhett probably has never met, is ridiculous. He has no grounds to claim he's a coward, Rhett just has a taller milk crate to preach from.

You're forgetting about taxes.
Also forgetting about, you know, every single aspect of adult life he will have to pay for during and after his ELC runs out.
But yeah, you guys are all right, a payout of 480K gross over three years is definitely enough to risk your entire future for, instead of waiting a couple years to get the same payout anyway...
This shouldn't even be a discussion. School is the right move for him. No questions asked.

So after taxes he's looking at around $250k over 3 years. He's passing on a scholarship worth a minimum of $90k in just tuition to earn that.
And as Polak pointed out he could quite easily have both.
I honestly don't think Canadians have the slightest grasp on what an education actually costs in the US. Let's say he goes the Wahl route and never sees the NHL. By passing on his scholarship he'd put himself in a position where close to half of his after tax earnings from his 3 year career would be required to cover the completion of his education. That's the reality.

In Rhett's eyes, the #1 goal is to be a NHL player and win a cup. Not to have a plan B, play with your brother, etc etc. You can disagree with him if you want, thats just the opinion he has.

I heard Warrener's take on it this morning and don't recall him calling Gaudreau scared. Sounded to me like the 'scared' comment was relating to the possibility of Johnny deciding to go the Justin Schultz route and sign with another team as a free agent. This should be a legitimate concern for all teams with NCAA prospects that look to be long term projects.

And that is why you don't listen to people who have been fortunate enough to have their dreams come true through playing a sport for life advice.
That is absolutely awful advice.

i don't disagree with that part either..... i'm someone who always has a plan B, plan C, plan D, etc.
just saying, the POV Rhett is providing is what i described above. not saying its right though.

Rhett
To be fair, Rhett said that Gaudreau was making the wrong choice for all the right reasons.
Rhett was lucky(and tough as nails) to not have needed a plan B, but even the way he said it, I sensed a bit of jealousy on Rhetts part as to the Year Gaudreau is going to have next year.
I always listen to Rhett as 1 day away from crossing the line and then I guess he will find out what his plan is, so in a sense we are lucky to blah blah... you get the picture. Pretty unique radio personality. Now if we could only do something about the Diamond Jewellery ads. WOW, its bad right?
My boring take on Youngblood
I'm ok with it. I know nothing about anything, but today I think he may be the most important piece going forward, I'd hate to lose him ala Shultz. This is when the Owners need to inject some excitement into the situation, I guess a new building is a formality. Iggy left some feathers on his way out, players and free agents need to want to play here, shirts are optional.
rambling...

I'm fine with him staying another year at BC it is probably the best option for him. For those saying hes 140 5"7, i'm pretty sure hes closer to 170 5"9 now. still needs to put on a few more pounds though
I am however a bit nervous that he decides to stay at BC in his senior year and starts considering signing with a different team.
Hopefully a Nathan Mackinnon or Jonathan Drouin will help make his decision.

This has the rhythm and abstraction of haiku.
I don't know what it means, but I like it.

I'm not worried about Gaudreau and I think he made a good decision. Is it just me though or are we seeing more college free agent signings/sweepstakes this year than previously? I really worry that as the competition for free agents heats up that it will have an affect on drafted players and we'll see more and more waiting out their draft team to get to pick their destiny. After all these players have already chosen the long road, waiting a few more months is not a big deal in the bigger scheme of things.
Hanowski and Ramage will be bell-weathers in this regard for the Flames.
