My sense is Kipper would be retiring regardless of his family situation. That's the way his contract was set up. So he's not in it for the money. He's not in it to play in the NHL. He's not in it to make Flames management or fans happy. Kipper's only reason for being in this city, this league, was to compete for a Cup with the Flames. With that no longer realistic, his heart is already back in Finland at his cabin.
That this was likely Kipper's last season in the NHL shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

We weren't going to get much for him anyway. People were speculating maybe a third rounder. I'm glad he's retiring a flame he deserves it. He's been our best player since he arrived here since 2003.

That's the beef I have. What's to say that the NTC was asked for by the Kipper camp and Sutter said fine but we will reduce the term or money. Essentially Kipper could have said to his agent; fine we will take the deal with the early expiring NTC winking that it's still going to be no-trade for him just not in contract. I have a problem with the ethics but at the end of the day we are arguing about a minor return and you can't put a gun to his head.

He doesn't have a contractual right to block a trade, but he does have a contractual right to retire if traded. If he was traded, then retired (didn't report), and then played the next season, the Flames could take legal action. But if he wants to stop playing hockey, nothing you can do about it but try and keep a good relationship with the player

He signed that deal five years ago. You can't imagine circumstances changing in the course of half a decade to dramatically affect a decision that was made at this one point in time? This "would've / should've" crap is nonsense that ignores the multifaceted complexity of real life.

Sorry, just can't handle how unprofessional this is. We don't owe Kiprusoff anything, he owes us 1 more year at 1.5MM with no NTC.

He deserves to plan his own exit from the league. I have a ton of respect for the guy.

The return that Kiprusoff would have gotten at this point of his career is far from "screwing" us. Give it a rest.

The only disgusting thing about this situation is some fans' reactions.
Do you really believe that he should be forced into involuntary servitude rather than be allowed to retire? That trading him for what could very well be a mid-round pick is 'honoring his contract', and that nothing else matters.
Seriously, grow THE F up.
Good going Kipper. You do what is right for your family. The only idiots that will be mad are the idiots that gave you the bronx cheer instead of giving you the patience you deserved to work your way through it that time.
Go out on your own terms. You deserve that much.

I understand that Kipper doesn't want to move and plans on retiring at the end of the season, and I support his choices. But if this is the way he wants it he should retire right now and forego the balance of this years salary.
He is, and can continue to be one of the better goalies in the NHL (this seasons numbers aside) but apparently his heart is not in it anymore. If that is the case then the team can not allow him to play in any more games. If he is only playing half-hearted to finish the season what message does that send to his teammates. He has been the backbone of the team since he arrived in town and deserves everyones respect, but he also should respect the fans and the organization and continue to apply himself 100% to the task at hand.
Best of luck in the future to Kipper

That could be a problem if it was a wink-wink nudge-nudge cap circumvention deal. The Flames could be in trouble.

Pretty much saw this coming, i just hope no investigation becomes of it.
I doubt the Flames organization can throw him a "last game celebration" at the dome this year. I think they have to keep things quite when regarding Kippers retirement.
Sadly Kipper will probably go out getting lit up for 5 goals and some fans will not even know that it was his last game.

The entitlement that has been growing around here reminds me of Canucks fans. There is a reason why they are the most hated fans in pro sport. Please, let's not follow them down that path. Kiprusoff will retire in the manner that he sees fit. He owes us nothing more.

I'm kind of hoping that he decides he doesn't want to go out like this and come back next season with some fire and mentor Ramo. I don't want the Flames to just settle into being awful for years.

You are completely lopsided.
First he has the right to retire.
NOw your saying its not his fault for not have the farsighted vision to have an NTC due to changing circumstances. He's an adult, he should need to live up to the line he signs on.

Some of you guys a vicious. How quickly we forget what he did for this team. We would be on a 16 year playoff drought if not for him.

If people wanted to make the argument that he's screwing the Flames over they certainly shouldn't bring up the return that he would've fetched today...
They should bring up how he could've mentored our inexperienced goalies for a year next year.
Fans are overreacting. This doesn't really harm the Flames...
