Too? I didn't get the last one deleted. The only thing I speculated in that thread was whether Rob Ford was made of deli meats.

Based on other posts that he's made, I don't think that he is, but I am and he is correct that it's legally ok to speculate as long as you're clear that what you are saying is mere speculation. I don't necessarily agree with him that Burke's suit is a waste of time, but that's beside the point.

Also, even though speculation would be legally permissible, I respect the mods' decision to hold this place to a higher standard.

If it's all the same I'm going to defer to pucklucks expertise here.

I pm'd photon that I fully understand why the mods did what they did and I in no way want to bring or help bring any unwanted spotlight or attention to waste their time from lawyers or anything like that. If I had even a bit of a hand in getting a thread deleted I apologize to all involved, not just the mods.

The drug dealers who own the video sure didn't help themselves in trying to generate $600,000 by letting the media see it (Toronto Star reporters).

The only way they get that coin is by blackmail and the only way to do that is keeping it confidential and letting fear of release do its work. Now the cat is out of the bag. The video is almost worthless. They might as well just release it.

Dollars to doughnuts, however, that they probably did try the blackmail route first. Allegedly of course!!!

I doubt this video is legit. The Star just has a massive hard-on for Ford and prints whatever they can to ruin him. Not saying that I am a Ford supporter by any means, but the witch hunt that the Star has been on since his election is just insane.

I doubt that they would fabricate the existence of a video especially since it eventually will be released.

Also I would have thought having a hard-on would mean that you liked something, like I have a massive hard-on for Scarlett Johansson... that would imply that I liked her, not that I wish to see her ruined.

Edit: Okay I wouldn't mind seeing her ruined... but not in the Rob Ford way.

The editorial board at the Star is no doubt anti-Ford, but they're also a legitimate media outlet, not a tabloid rag. They wouldn't report baseless rumours and speculation even if it suited their anti-Ford agenda. If they say that two of their reporters have seen the video, I'm inclined to believe them.

Of course, that's no guarantee the video itself is genuine, but we have no way of knowing that until the press has the opportunity to do a real analysis of it.

As so many of you like to say, innocent til proven guilty.

Until we see the video itself, and we see Ford smoking crack the video is just the boogeyman in the room.

The Star is putting itself in a very actionable position by jumping on this, at some point now they're going to be forced to buy that video so that they can post it to prove the allegations or be destroyed.

Most of the other media allegations are being very conservative on this story, but the Star which is well known for hating everything Rob Ford is stupidly charging forward like a Rhino in the room.

All we've seen is Ford hanging out with questionable people including one dead drug dealer, but you can't claim guilt by association until you see him inhaling from the pipe.

I'm not a huge fan of Ford, I see him as an enormous buffoon, but he's survived scandals in the past, the most recent one being gropegate where the woman in question comes across as more of a political opportunistic then anything else and didn't back her claims.

The Star may have blundered in a very bad way in this case.

Rob Ford owning the Star would be hilarious if you think about it.

Reporters have made stuff up before, publishers have sensationalized and exaggerated to sell papers.

If Ford was smoking crack he needs to go and at the least get help for what seems to be a problem that destroys life.

If the video isn't conclusive I don't know if the Star can hide behind the usual journalistic rules.

We're talking about a paper that once had its entire sports department accuse the Toronto Blue Jays of being a racist organization because there weren't very many black people in the system at that one moment in time. Ironically, the Star itself had an even worse record of diversity at that point. Not to mention Damien Cox's Glen Beck-esque "I'm not saying Jose Bautista uses steroids, I'm just asking a question" bit.

The Star is legitimate in the same way Sun Media is. Feel free to draw whatever conclusion you like from that.

The Star is pretty much a rag if you look at their history.

If they don't like somebody they go off of the rails.

But if it is the Star manufacturing this, then why was it a reporter for Gawker who make the existence of the video public?

The Star hadn't published anything, even though, according to their report, they saw the video 2 weeks ago.

So the Star is tipped about the video, sees it, sits on it for 2 weeks. Meanwhile Gawker gets offered the video, a reporter flies up to see it, and then reports what he saw.

Then the Star publishes the story they have been preparing.

So unless Gawker is somehow working with The Star, it was Gawker who spilled the beans then The Star rushed out what they already had.

Incidentally, Gawker has started an Indiegogo campaign to purchase the video.

The oldest rule in lawsuits, don't sue the guy without the money and who can do the least amount of harm to you.

The Star has certainly taken the ball and run with it, and without having the video in hand to back up their claims. A reporter saying he saw the video really doesn't cut it at all. They currently can't prove the allegations visually.

If they're so sure you'd think they would have written a check the night the reporter saw it, this story would sell more then $600,000 dollars worth or paper profit, that's what smells to me. There's a real logic flaw to me in why the Star didn't snap up the video as soon as they saw it and basically have the exclusive on a huge story.
