It shouldn't bother me but Butterfield leaving to Boston to join Farrell does. I hate the Red Sox and this whole Farrell situation just multiplies my hatred.

Darren Oliver will return for next year.
The Jays declined the option for Rajai Davis, and then signed him for 1 year @ 2.5 million. Basically he gets 3 mil like his option called for but gets 500K immediately due to them declining the option.

Blue Jays simply picked up his option. He is still mulling over retirement.

Davis has a lot of value as long as he's not starting. If he's starting, he's one of the worst everyday outfielders in baseball IMO

So now the Jays have traded a manager + 2 players for a mediocre pitcher.

rogers is a K/inning guy, could be a good addition, so long "long-ball" Frasor, good riddance.

I'm actually hoping they can keep Frasor as well. Inning eaters are useful on a team, and to have more of them in the event the SP's fault, is a good thing. I thought Aviles would have been a useful option to have, but I guess AA has something up his sleeve.

Quick take on Jays deal: Rogers a cheap, controllable power arm a la Delabar/Lincoln. Saves at least a 1m, maybe 1.5m. Frasor/Lyon gone.

Don't think that's a fair assessment.

Those 2 players are both minor leaguers, with little or no upside. Rogers is coming off a heck of a second half with the Indians. Power arm, with a high K rate. He's not a sure thing but much more promising then either of the two players they gave up and now they've found a way to get a legit asset for a manager which needs to be applauded.

Then why aren't Cleveland keeping him? Cleveland acquired Rogers out of Colorado thinking "he will be better getting out of Colorado" and he has been better. So why not keep him?

Something smells.

Why would anyone get traded in the first place then? His success in his time with Cleveland hardly makes him an untouchable. He showed signs of promise but did not set the world on fire. This was not someone who set the world on fire. Very much the same as the Jays bringing in Avilies, they saw him as someone who could give the team value but were willing to part with him when they saw the chance to get someone else.

They see Gomes as a catcher and Avilies is a nice utility infielder to have around. They see Rogers as a dispensable pitcher they can afford to move to pick up other pieces and perhaps view the 53 innings they pitched with them to not be as valuable as the Blue Jays did. Clearly AA seems to value strong throwing right handed relief pitchers, and there is a much greater emphasis on the bullpen in the AL East then in any other division it would seem.

Cleveland also has 3-4 very good relievers so they are dealing from a position of strength, as we are with our many catchers

The Indians are flush with relievers but can use Aviles and Gomes. We don't really need Aviles (We have Hechavarria who can more or less contribute the same) but getting another Delabar/Lincoln type of cheap pitcher that can K a ton is very helpful. If all of Rogers, Delabar, Lincoln, Janssen, and Santos pitch to their recent performances, we'll have a fairly decent shut down pen.

I really wish the Jays had interest in Josh Hamilton. The guy has apparently really turned his life around and for some reason, his personality would really fit in with the Jays organization. Of course, you wouldn't have him around for that, but the guy has one hell of a bat and is relatively young. I'm glad they didn't go after Fielder, because of conditioning, but you can't complain about Hamilton's work ethic. To me he's worth a 5 year contract for $20M each year, though I believe about a month ago I read on PSD that the Jays weren't interested in him. Bats like him don't come around often.

+1 on the bat. is bat is amazing, he's my favorite player to watch when he's on

He struggled a lot this year with his life away from the diamond. Not with relapsing but with his lifestyle and having to take games off and some really weird media interactions. He needs to find a batting coach and manager that will be hard on him. His 2nd half, he literally swung at everything and finished pretty poor, on Josh Hamilton like numbers. His work ethic and the person he is still is a concern to a lot of teams but I'm right there with you that I'd love to see him and Joey Bats 3 and 4 in the lineup. I did not see him going back to Texas but now I think he will if there initial offer was actually legit.

I can't go into many details, but I would be absolutely shocked if McCarthy isn't back with the A's.
