The jingoism at times is a tad annoying, I have to say.

You just threw up some random graph as far as I'm concerned. What was the question that was asked and who was polled? You need to provide that information for the graph to have any meaning.

Why wouldn't I? Honestly where do you think Canada would be without the US? Because we border on the US we don't have to fund a proper military unlike other westernized countries. Because we border on the US we pay much less for automobiles and other consumer goods which are more expensive in Europe. The US provides pretty well all of our entertainment and are the main source of all our exports.
I'm not going to go as far and say that Canada couldn't exist without the US but we would definitely not be living the cosy lifestyles we do without them.

There are a lot more variables inherent in that besides simply bordering the United States.
Being separated by oceans on both sides with no other land borders, let alone with historical enemies, helps.
Besides, it's not as if every other Western industrialized nation puts US or UK, or even French, money into their military. We're doing alright, all things considered. What matters is how it's spent.

They find Canadians to be friendly, nice and very similiar to Americans if they know anything at all. Usually it is a conversation killer because they don't know much about the country. There is a perception that we speak French and English equally well..haha..and liberals love our healthcare while conservatives don't. They ask about the high taxes and more recently the oilsands.
Posters like Montana Moe and Sowa are typical American in that they don't understand that Anti Americanism is part of the Canadian national identity. In fact, it is the very definition of Canadianism unfortunately that goes back to the Revolutionary war.
The irony of course is how Canadians love American culture via the internet, movies, tv, music, shopping, American products and prices. Canadians are and have been economically dependent on the the States since Confederation even to the extent that trade between the provinces and the US is easier than interprovincial trade because of artificially created provincial tariffs.
Canadians compare themselves on every level to America that borders on paranoia like daily local news updates on how the loonie is doing versus the greenback. You don't see that in the States even in border towns.
I think Americans would be shocked and confused how disliked they are by their closest relatives since we are so similar. A typical American see Canadians in the same view as a New Yorker would see a Washingtonian...American in all but name. Certainly differently than the perception towards Europeans or Mexicans.
Canadians OTOH essentially have a built in envy and an inferiority complex that is manifested by a need to point out how bad and stupid Americans are at any opportunity to compensate.

You pretty much nailed it. If you were to ask a Canadian what it means to be "Canadian" the typical answer would almost always be "not American." There has always been a sort of identity crisis among Canadians. I think a big part of that is because Canadians are just as ignorant as Americans. As a history major I find it extremely disappointing how little Canadians know about their own country. We have an interesting past that should be celebrated, not hidden away. There is a lot more to this country then simply being "not American."

Why do Americans hate us Canadians?!?! http://www.kirotv.com/news/news/bell...mplain-/nQ9g7/
“I'ts hard to find a parking spot. Them Canadians can be rude.” Us Canadians should stop being rude and park in our own damn country!
To the OP, hate is a pretty strong word for me, I dislike some Americanisms, but I certainly don't hate Americans.

Something like an area the size of Rhode Island would have been flooded.
Today, my family owns a house that we supposedly flooded last June.

At the end of the day, rivalry is fun. Calgary hates Edmonton, but it's the West vs Upper Canada politically (for the love of all that is good and holy Ontario is NOT the East) but then it's Canada vs the US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, etc
Heck if you want to break it down cuter, schools, neighborhoods, families, teams, shirts or skins. We thrive on rivalry.
We might say we hate our rivals, but I don't think we actually do. When it all comes down to business, we tend, or at least I tend, to treat everyone the same, or at least try to.
I can't wait to go to the States again, I love Boston, behind only Montreal as my favorite city (sorry Calgary) I can't wait to see New York, Las Vegas, LA, Atlanta and I want to see my Rangers play in Dallas. The parts of the States I've been to I've enjoyed, why not see more?
