If the games go on CBC, besides channel 6, who do they own to broadcast various events?

I'm trying to remember the last time CBC had an Olympics or World Cup.
I think they use CBC Newsworld maybe? Pretty sure they use Bold too.
I'd imagine that it isn't as heavy a CBC bid as suggested. CBC sports just isn't very big anymore. They have very limited personalities left to cover the games.

Yeah that sounds like the IOC alright. Even the NCAA thinks the IOC is a corrupt money grabbing organization.
And yes CBC used Bold for most of the boringer events, TSN got the decent stuff and CBC kept the goods. With TSN2 now, that should help keep most of the quality events to those channels.

If there's no Canadian provider, hopefully we'd just get the BBC feed. Always like British commentary.

Olympic coverage without Brian Williams would be wierd. I hope we find a work around... stupid IOC.

Russia staves off 11 set points in CAN vs RUS beach volleyball in 2nd set. Russia won the first set.
Finally, CAN wins 2nd set after 12 set points.

Agreed, though that may be pretty painful for the hockey coverage haha. I wonder how many times they'd call it "ice hockey".
Guess I haven't watched enough of the Olys so far this time around to realize CTV's dropping the ball. That's too bad, I was really hoping they'd do a good job so we'd never have to deal with CBC Sports again. Just a shadow of its former self IMO. CBC has excellent news coverage. Sports, not so much..

They wouldn't stop calling it ice hockey. Hockey over here is field hockey.
I am watching the USA-Tunisia basketball game right now and they have two Aussies doing commentary and it is terrible. I can't image what the coverage will be like for Sochi over here.

Is GB beating Brazil a bit of an upset? My impression is that Brazil and USA are teams to avoid, so GB could be the most beatable matchup for Canada. Still not going to be easy by any stretch, especially with the home fans in Coventry, but I think Canada should have as much as a chance as they did against Sweden.

I don't think CTV has done a poor job with the coverage at all, I think we just became accustomed to the high level coverage from the Vancouver Olympics and expected the same quality even though they are half-way around the world.
I have heard the complaint that the primetime show bounces around and does show enough og the complete event. In Vancouver we were dealing with the same timezone so it allowed for everything to be carried live and for all the main events to be shown in their entirety in prime time quite easily for us in Canada.
When it is in a different time zone it becomes much more difficult to provide the same coverage in primetime because you are then trying to squeeze 12 hours of events into the 4 hour prime-time slot you have available (7-11). Then you add the fact that there are more Summer then Winter events and I think that is where the complaints are coming from.
Having the events live (and less of those events) allows for the 10 minute in-dept athlete profile, but when you have to jam all the events of the day into that 4 hour prime time slot you are better served showing more of the actual events in prime time. Personally I would rather see the actual events, then hear about the athletes touching story about how they got to where they were today.

It's hardly official at this point. I've been very happy with their coverage.
The lack of feel good in-depth athlete profiles with montages and a good voice over have been overblown IMO.
I already saw a really good one from (the best Canadian sports journalist alive) Stephen Brunt right at the beginning of the Olympics, so I'm good for a while.

That worked out favorably in my mind for Canada.
It is always hard to play against the host country, but Brazil is traditionally the better team.
You have to think that US/GB/Can/NZ is the easier side of the bracket compared to Fra/Bra/Swe/Jpn
Looking at the world rankings.
U.S 1
Great Britain (England) 9
Canada 7
New Zealand 23
Japan 3
Sweden 4
Brazil 5
France 6
Now we just need a big game against GB and if only New Zealand can upset the Americans...

I don't think Canadian coverage has been bad. However, again, look at the atrocious US coverage by NBC, and be glad that we have an official broadcaster that actually cares.
In this age of instantaneous news worldwide, NBC tries to pretend that the games only happen during primetime hours in the US. Menawhile, in the commercial break immediately preceding a swimming final, they advertise the today show for the following morning which totally spoils the result of the upcoming race.

I am finding CTV/TSN's coverage to be pretty good overall.
I do agree that not having Steve Armitage makes a difference in swimming commentary. Rod Smith is decent, but not as memorable.
Brian Williams and Ron McLean sort of cancel each other old, but Williams may be a little past his prime.
Onrait and O'Toole have been hilarious though, so it would suck to not have them take part next time around.
At least the coverage in Canada is a million times better than what you find in the US. Many people down there are complaining about the absence of live coverage, which I probably wouldn't put up with.
Almost every other first world country has live coverage, so for NBC to only show tape delayed programming in this day and age is absolute craziness. This is 2012, not 1990, people do care about seeing sporting events live; if you want to avoid spoilers you essentially have to become an Amish person for 7 hours (credit to Dan Le Betard on that one).
