This thread helps put into perspective what fan expectation and perception of Johnny was at the time he was drafted. You don't even need to read the comments, just the fact this thread isn't 200 pages long tells you the story of a 4th round pick turned superstar in the span of 3 years.

Lets hope he has even more NHL success than our other amazing 4th rounder Brodie.

How big is JG now?

5'9 160 was his weigh in for this tourney I believe.

Great article. Reminds me a bit of the "Brady 6", an ESPN documentary on the 6 quarterbacks taken ahead of Tom Brady in the 2000 NFL draft.

Also funny to see that Steve f--ing Staois almost cost us a shot at picking Johnny Hockey

he is not our savior, he is a great piece to the puzzle of putting a winning team together. It takes a team to win, maybe Principe doesn't understand that.

He's just laying the groundwork so if Gaudreau doesn't destroy the league, he can have something for the Greasers to point and laugh about. Orders from headquarters.

How would he? He can keep polishing the turd, but all he's doing is spreading it around.

I have some issues with this comparison and the expectations side of it. Manziel first round pick with a ton of "franchise saviour" hype from the get-go and the attitude to go with it. Gaudreau had 0 expectations, 4th rounder and had to humbly work his butt off to get there. Kind of a stupid comparison IMO

I think the comparison is due to the "Johnny [sport]" nick names, not the players themselves and their respective paths to the pros.

Although the Oilers newsboy sure is painting it that way.

Wow, what a difference 3 years makes. Makes you think twice about making immediate judgement and gives you some appreciation for picking a few longshots in the draft.

The Poirier draft thread is a lot worse than this one (probably because it was a 1st round pick). So many overreactions in that one.

Didn't take Poirier long to shut them all up.

If there's any fanbase in the NHL with a right to be skeptical about draft selections, it's Flames fans. By the time you've seen your 7th or 8th first-round bust, it's hard to give Flames brass the benefit of the doubt. So the skepticism is well-deserved.

I agree with this. Our 1st round selections have been pretty bad, but we are starting to turn that around. We've done some great scouting outside the 1st round, so now that we have the 1st rounders panning out, that's what is making our prospect pool strong. Hoping we can make it in the top 5 next year, I think we're considered 7th.

I agree the Flames are turning it around. But at the time of the Gaudreau selection, that wasn't apparent.
