Yes, you can blame them. It takes roughly a three game winning streak by a team like the Oilers for fans and media alike to get onboard, the Flames not-so-much. Calgary hasn't done itself any favoures but they're traditionally given the shaft by the media.

Then his decision making is worse that I thought.
Most of the time he played the puck, there was absolutely no reason for it. It's an odd way of trying to win (leaving the net exposed to make high risk plays when the score is tied or the Flames even ahead).

Actually, he was a valuable asset to the d who could conserve energy because they knew he'd play the puck.
Just ask him:

“My puck-handling is a big attribute to the defence,” said Smith, who probably knows the Oilers spend far too much time in their own end with the NHL’s best puck-handling goalie probably able to hit Connor McDavid in full flight a few times.

The danger in that of course, is relying on it too heavily. He'll likely have all of McDoofus' assists next year.

It worked well substantially more often than not.
The problem with Mike Smith's goaltending was not that he played the puck too often or poorly. The problem was that he struggled to keep the puck out of the net too often when he WASN'T playing it. I get that a lot of people were frustrated by him last year, and this is why it became voguish to complain about virtually everything he did from his on ice play, to the way he carried himself in interviews, to his fashion choices. It's an exaggerated and revisionist narrative, and as with all such fabrications it detracts from the truth.

We would probably be better off just stretching the sweater out in front of the net. The effectiveness of it is reduced as soon as Talbot puts it on.

I like Rittich. I am not sure if he is ready for what awaits, but I have faith in him to perform well as a heavily used back-up. Unfortunately, I see him needing to start at least 50-60 games next year.
I am still just worried that it looks like Talbot was the only option considered before free agency even hit. He isn't a good goalie IMO.
It's just like how Smith was targeted despite other better goalies being on the market. I am jaded with the Flames management at this point when it comes to being able to identify and target goalies. I mean, Arizona dumped Smith and replaced him with Raanta and Kuemper. Mrazek signed for just slightly more than Talbot. Lehner signed a zero risk one-year deal. Yet Talbot was rumoured to be the guy going all the way back to the draft and was all but finalized a week before July 1st.

I like Rittich too, I think he runs with it. But I believe Talbot as a back up is a perfect low risk option. Who has shown his own ability to go on a run in the past. If he doesn’t work out he leaves next summer. It’s Rittichs spot to lose.
I like Talbots game, I was hoping the flames could pry him out of NY, and was pretty rattled when Edmonton of all teams did it.

The Flames were looking for a guy to backup and platoon with bsd. That defined the type of guy they would get. The so called other options likely weren’t interested in a situation where there is a guy management has called their starter

I'm just happy they didn't have to give up picks to get him.
