But it's not about this one incident - the point is that this is actual proof that there is active game management happening.

Of course all the other evidence is heavily circumstantial as its very clear that refs are making calls as much based on situation - who's up, who's down, who's had more calls, who's "due", what period it is, what game of the series it is (if playoffs), which player committed the infraction, which player was the target.

It's obviously an imperfect science and if you called every thing that's a penalty by the book, they'd play the whole game 3 on 3.

But I absolutely hate how the refs, often under the guise of being "fair" or "impartial" actually end up influencing the game by how they choose to call (or not call) things.

It is a thankless job. But it's not impossible - just call the games consistently. If it's a clear penalty, call it in the first *and* the third. If one team ends up having 10 penalties and the other 2, that's how it goes.

I think fans would be less likely to call "rigged" or question the impartiality of the refs if they weren't so actively trying to manage the games.

I hear ya dude. I think often people calling rigged though is them actually trying to cope with the result not going the way their passion wants it to go. For example, no one calls out the missed calls for the team they are rooting against. It’ll never be perfect. But I agree with the consistency. At least we get powerplays in OT these days. We didn’t 10-20 years ago
