Especially in set 3, you could see Novak breathing heavy after those extended rallies while Rune was still bouncing around with plenty of pep. One guy is 20 while the other guy turns 36 in a few days.

8 of the last 10 Slams played have been won by Nadal or Novak. They have tuned their schedules to only peak at the slams now and don't mind losing in Masters 1000 events. Novak is still the huge favorite to win the French Open this year IMO.

Maybe, but we're starting to see the little niggles and injuries that start to creep in as guys get older (coupled with it taking longer to recover from said injuries). It's a fool's errand to count out Nadal or Djoker at Roland Garros, but also the young guys like Alcaraz and Rune don't have the same kind of mental scar tissue as guys like Tsitisipas and Zverev have either.

They can do that all they want, but what it comes down to is that you simply won't consistently be at the top of your game if you aren't playing regularly. Some of this is injury related for sure, but most of it feels like indifference knowing they are more likely to be beaten in a best of 3 versus a best of 5 early.
Match conditioning and mental sharpness are things you can only get from playing live matches like this, and jumping into a slam with very little high end match time compared to the rest of the top 10 is a big miscalculation IMO. Even if you are Nadal, Djokovic and/or Federer who always have a chance.

Sadly I don't think there is anyway Nadal plays the French this year. Honestly I would be surprised if he came back before Canada. I don't think he will stop trying to come back yet, but I do wonder if we have seen the last of him. Makes me cherish last year AO and RG titles a little bit more.

The longer a player stays away, the harder it is for them to get back to previous levels if that's even possible in today's tennis where the quality of play is so high. Thiem and Zverev today are nowhere near the levels they were prior to injury. As good as Nadal is, I'm not sure he's good enough at his age where he can just show up on tour after taking 6 months off and pick up where he left off. It's going to come down to how much losing he's willing to tolerate to get enough matches in him where he can get back up to speed.

Iga looked to be in total control over Elena up a break in set 2 and then Rybakina flipped the script and won set 2 in a tie-break.

Medvedev dismisses Hanfmann 6-2 6-2 and is into the semi-finals. He awaits the winner of Oikos vs. Coric.
