The media is the absolute worst when it comes to aviation. What the hell even is this article. https://globalnews.ca/news/10991071/...-dc-crash/amp/

Wow, that’s amazing that they made a whole news story out of that.
If that scenario is newsworthy, I’d be getting in the news at least once a year, if not more.

How often are planes diverted back to YYC shortly after takeoff? We had a pretty big plane go over us and as usual, I pulled it up on Flightradar, and it was a flight from Calgary to Frankfurt. Turns out it did a hard u-turn over the Brooks area and headed back to YYC. I guess I've never noticed, but it probably happens a lot?
I feel for those folks, especially with the cancelations and delays at the airport today.

Pretty rare for it to happen on an overseas flight, as we don't have a ton of them overall as a percentage of the total. Coming back right after takeoff is usually a tech issue, but could also be medical or the occasional unruly passenger.

Unless it is a severe emergency situation don't they usually fly out 150km+ to dump fuel before they can return for a landing?

Not all aircraft need to or have the ability to.

Yeah some planes either don't have dump capabilities or it's optional. If you land overweight it's not like it's immediately game over, you just might need an overweight landing inspection, a longer brake cooldown, or more runway to land (we have the 2 longest runways in the country)
If you're high enough up the dumped fuel just evaporates. They're supposed to ask first... they don't always do.

Have a family member whose flight has been diverted from toronto airport, they asked me to check online if something had happened as the pilot said there was a plane incident at Pearson. The rumour on twitter is it may have been a crash from a delta plane.

Maybe all the snow cushioned the plane when it turned upside down.

Air ambulances coming in so presumably some critical injuries. Right in front of FedEx so main runway 05/23 will be affected. Police at all entry points to the airport right now.

One video had a dude appearing to say most people appear to be ok.
Wow this could have been much worse.
Will be interesting to learn what happened on landing. Serious wind shear?

8 injuries it looks like. Most of the guys I am talking to are assuming some kind of wind shear on landing, which means the tower might be in trouble. Everyone just kind of waiting to see what happens now.

The roads are probably bad still so we could be reading too much into air ambulances responding.
