This is really pissing me off today lol
You watch a team like Tampa just lock up core player after core player, and we lose Johnny for nothing because of ####ing geography.

Hey guys. I'm back. Crazy stuff going on at home and I've been away from writing for a bit but can't ignore the latest! Here are some moves the Flames could make.

Geography, Culture, Areana, weather. Tampa is a beautiful place with low taxes and a lot of freedom (especially for the wealthy).

Its entirely possible that they didnt.
Philly may have just saved themselves ~$80M.
They are nowhere near competing at any point in the remains of Gaudreau's career. He may not have even wanted to go to Philly.
At some point even us Flames fans may have to concede that we may have dodged a bullet.
Johnny is a great player...but thats a lot of money and a lot of term. Its a big risk to commit that much and realistically what is our own 'Window to win?' Does it coincide with Gaudreau's age and production and potential decline in that production?
Do we want to commit that cap and term for maybe 1 or 2 more shots at it?

Looking back now it looks like two mistakes may have been made here: one by each side.
A) Flames likely should have given Gaudreau permission to talk to other teams in advance of the deadline yesterday.
That would have allowed Gaudreau to see what was out there on the market (appears that it might not be great)
And
If there was a good offer the Flames could have tried to work out a sign and trade for that 8th year (I know it's never happened but it was close last year with Hyman and the Oilers, and Gaudreau is a couple levels higher than that)
B) Gaudreau's camp should have never told the Flames or come out and said publicly that it was a "Family Decision" yesterday.
That made it very clear that NJ, PHI, and NYI were likely the only options. And with PHI not having cap, and NYI not really being a real option (IMO) it's really made NJ seem like the only option and they have leverage now.

I personally don't really get the point of either of those teams signing him to that money.
Not sure I would sign him to $12 million per year. Or even $11 million.
8 x $9.5 would have been my max. Win something first and then get $10+.

As much as we love our city the US seems just that more attractive to players, taxes lower in some or most other cities.

Taxes are typically lower, but Canadian players still get paid in American money. That must off set the tax difference.

Florida is basically a dream come true for Canadians escaping our winters too.
Plus you always have Florida man, so there's no shortage of entertainment

Yup.
Looks like terrible management by his agent.
"family decision" means 27 other teams are literally not even inquiring about it.

It doesn't offset anything. It's a different unit of measurement, that's all. As I've said in other threads, measuring your height in centimetres instead of inches doesn't make you any taller, and measuring your income in CAD instead of USD doesn't make you any richer.

I am actually ok with it. Part of me wonders if its not a coincidence we saw a career year from Johny in the offensive and defensive end during his contract yesr. Sutter too but also this.
If he just wants to go then just go.
The part that stings is if he knew he was going just tell the team so we could have made moves that followed that future.

I'm a fan of a particular writer who moved from Washington state to Florida. He says that in each of those places, the weather is too crappy to go outside for several months each year, but at least when the weather is crappy in Florida, there's no snow on the roads. These are wise words.

Johnny is proving to be almost as entertaining in free agency as he is on the ice, though definitely looking less adept.

It's not impossible, despite what Tre had to say yesterday. But it would mean some pretty sudden remorse on Johnny's part, likely coupled with discovering that the UFA market is not as kind to him as he might have hoped.
If NJ is standing pat at 9 million per (for example), and if Columbus comes out and says they were just kidding all along, maybe Calgary at 10.5 for 7 starts to look pretty good again, especially since it was such a difficult call for Johnny in the first place.
But that's a lot of humble pie to eat, and I'd put the odds of that at about 25 to 1 against.

I don't like the way him and his agent played things out with his decision, but if he changed his mind and came back to Flames to see if a deal could still be done, you can't just hang up the phone out of spite.
