Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is heading to the Oscars on Sunday followed by an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday, the Toronto Sunreports. “I am going to the Oscars. It’s going to be fun,” Ford told the Sun. “I am really looking forward to it.”
It is unclear what role, if any, Ford will play in the Oscar telecast.
Quote:
Earlier, Kimmel coined the phrase “Rob Fording” to describe a person trying to push through a crowd of reporters. He then tried it himself and said the experience was “kind of scary.”
Kimmel has called Ford “the best at what he does,” what he does specifically being “pulling nuggets out of his bag of crazy.”
Quote:
On Friday night, Ford became immortalized in a different way, appearing as a float in the annual Mardi Gras parade.
The larger-than-life replica of Ford smoking a crack pipe was featured front and centre in a Mardi Gras parade float sending up headline-grabbing Canadian celebrities.
The “Canadian Club” float ribbed Ford for his admitted drug use, and sported mockup Toronto Star headlines blaring “Mayor Ford: ‘So I smoked a little crack”’ and “I was in a drunken stupor.”
Painted on the side of the float were caricatures of Justin Bieber — who faces drug use allegations in Florida — clutching a smoky bong and former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson holding a sign reading “Remember me?”
Rob Ford tells CNN that Toronto is Hollywood North.
Setting aside any dislike you have for Ford (if it is possible to set that aside), what are the odds that Toronto being proclaimed as Hollywood North would have otherwise been a front page news link on CNN.com on Oscar night?

So your advocating celebrity status here? Doesn't sound like you man.
Besides I think it's actually kinda creepy (and typical of the worst parts of our culture) that a guy like this gets faux celebrity status. It's all the trainwrecks of reality TV. Nothing more.
Lastly, to answer your question, as far as the online versions of news sites, they have crazy links on the front page all the time. Look at this video of a cat chasing off a bear. That sort of thing. Not that amazing. Considering Ford's been international news for a whiel, it's not a surprise, people are eating it up all over the world.
I think for the first time in the whole scandal, Ford turned the media obsession into something of a positive for Toronto. Up until now it has been nothing but very negative.
And to add for clarity: no, this ounce of positive attention does not repair the damage.

It's a damn shame that John Tory is running for mayor, I really wanted to see Rob Ford get re-elected.
If there's one fact in life that I know to be certain, it's that John Tory loses elections. He will manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Don't you worry...

Rob Ford is going to be directly responsible for millions of more tourists in Toronto?
Also, please never use the term 'RoFo' again. Sheesh

I don't doubt that but he'll pick up a ton of Ford voters.
Lol apparently the toronto sun had a canned article ready to go declaring the interview a win for toronto and ford, posted it too early before the interview was even done and then hastily pulled it down as the interview went on and the train wreck unfolded.
The only people scummier than politicians are political backers and strategists trying to put a spin on everything. If only we could round them up and send them all to an island somewhere... Hans island sounds about right.

What happened?
I can't believe he agreed to go on Kimmel
Nothing really crazy, Kimell made fun of him quite a bit and showed a blooper real of his eff ups. Ford sweated a lot and acted awkward, tried to talk about why people should vote for him a bit.
It seems Mayor Rob Ford walked into a bit of an ambush.
An all out barrage maybe a better way to put it.
Turns out Mayor Rob Ford’s appearance on with Jimmy Kimmel was a lot tougher than he was expecting.
The American TV star was relentless in his questions and showed four embarrassing videos.
He probably should have seen that coming.
It should not have been a surprise since Kimmel has been merciless on him and his scandals for months.
“He’s a little upset,” Doug Ford admitted over the line from Los Angeles just after the taping the segment. “But he’s okay.”
In the background I could hear the mayor saying he was “set up” but did not seem angry or pouting.
“He’ll be back out swinging tomorrow,” laughed his big brother.
Ford kind of got lulled into the whole Kimmel picking him up at the airport thing in a limo and had the impression it was not going to be as intense a grilling as it turned out to be.
It was good strategy by Kimmel. It seems Jimmy was chummy with him ever since he arrived out in Los Angeles Saturday but was unyielding in his questioning.
But Doug said even though it was a rough ride on Kimmel, the mayor was holding his head high.
“He got his side out,” said Doug. “He did his best.”
It really speaks to the level of delusion he harbours, about his 'celebrity.' It's very Emperor's New Clothes for him. I don't know how he didn't have a clue that he was being soundly mocked and that these invites are nothing more than filleting.
Haven't seen the interview yet but after seeing Kimmel tear down Leno in that 10 for 10 segment I can't imagine how Ford would think that it was going to be good for him.

Yeah, turned out really well. Not sure how it's positive anyway. It's not like I ever said, 'Wow, that Weiner scandal really wants me to check out New York'.
It's trash TV and people like to watch a trainwreck. That's about it.
If anyone thinks this is going to have tangible benefits for Toronto's tourism, they're not paying attention.
